From the photo it doesn't look like the nose gear extended, would have thought it would be still visible beneath the plane?

Wonder if it was a nose gear up landing

Article states the aircraft was parked when the gear collapsed

We dont need so called experts telling us what has happened, believe me I know, I have seen an F35 once.
what has happened, when the brakes were applied there was an increase in pressure on the 3rd whiffle nut which lead to the spline bracket rupturing.
This combined with the stop in forward momentum meant that the overhead plunge valve could not operate causing gravity to take over.

Max Kemplhofs formula for rearward propulsion of male bovine faeces explains this quite easy.

Poor girl! It would have been a classic if she was reporting on the F-35 mishap!

I'm not a particular fan of the F35 but let's be fair every now and then this sort of thing happens, almost every type must have had a gear malfunction at one time or another.

Indeed, Blackjack56. Remember the nosewheel collapse on a C-5M at Kelly earlier this year (86-0023 - and it is now flying again).

Undercarriage failed to extend on the prototype F.16 on an early flight. It was belly-landed on grass and i have seen film of it. Good job the internet wasn't around in that day. General Dynamics may well have listened to the 'informed opinion' on it and canceled it. In my opinion, I THINK it went on to be a reasonable aircraft!!.
Just looked it up on the internet. Film is still there. F16 protoype bell-landing.

The F22 had a prototype's computer throw a wobbly which lead to a interesting landing.

F.22 was a crash, not a landing. The gear wasn't even down!!. Bad to look at, but horrible inside I suspect. Looked a lot like bad PIO, but wasn't.

...And I hear a F35 and a F18 have been damaged due to a refueling problem.

wow, i didn't know they used Hornets as refuellers, didn't think that was feasible or doable on a fighter.

Yes the USN have used A6, S3 and F18 as tankers. At the end of the day you need something able to operate from the carrier, when you're in the middle of nowhere. The RN used Buccaneers and others as carrier borne tankers too.

I think they tested a buddy tank on a Tornado too.

The Luftwaffe, Marinefleiger and Italian Air Force use them operationally and I believe there was a contingency plan to use the Tornado GR Mk1T as a buddy refueller during the first Gulf War.
