Questions on the Typhoon

Post by RubyRoo » Mon Aug 13, 2018 4:12 pm

Seeing as we have a Q&A thread for the F-35, why not for the Typhoon as well...

How many more deliveries are we expecting?

Have we now offloaded all of the unwanted Tranche 1 frames from service?

Is there enough space at Lossiemouth for the new Typhoon squadron(s?) with the arrival of the P-8 too?

On the latter point regarding space at Lossie. Yes there are HAS's on North side beside where QRA is and in addition a Hangar available between 1 and 6 Squadrons.

Collect enough parts of the Tranche 1's off E-bay and you can build your own! ;)

Also K16/17 hangars are vacant, unless there going to be part of the P8 operating area?

Interesting. Why is there such a large gap between hand over and delivery? Will it ever be delivered?

Lossiemouth has three C Type hangars.
Hangar1 is for 6 Sqn
Hangar 2 is Typhoon engineering. I am sure this will not change.
Hagar 3 is for 1 Sqn.
Two HAS's in the Northern HAS site are for QRA.
The Southern HAS site is for 2 Sqn.
The two hangars for the P8's are to be built to the east of the Northern HAS site. These are said to be one for the RAF and one for Boeing.
As for the D Type hangars, 16 and 17, on the South side:
One is a dedicated paint shop and the other is for;
2622 Auxiliary Sqn, RAF Regiment.
A detachment, from Wittering, of 71 (Inspection and Repair) Sqn.

I am not sure where 51 Sqn RAF Regiment is.

The two J/K type hangars, last used by 8 and then XV Sqn, were at one time planned to be demolished. If this is not now the case there would be no problem as they could each accommodate one squadron. Otherwise, as I see it, there is only the remaining HAS's in the Northern HAS site available plus, perhaps, squeezing in another Squadron with 2 Sqn in what is now there Southern HAS site?

Can anyone update this?

Hope this is of interest.

Some of your info is wrong I think,

Hangar 2 is seemingly earmarked for 9 Sqn.

K16 and K17 are both located on the Northside, these are the hangars that once housed 15 Sqn( I’ve never heard of these being earmarked for demolition).Hangar 4 is also a K hangar but is used purely as a store.

Over on the Southside there is K21 which used to house 202 Sqn (is this 2622 Sqns new home?) K20 was demolished a while back. The paint shop is housed in L22.

On the Northside there is L 31/32 and 33 these used to house 2622, the car club/store and 51 Sqn respectively. Also on the North there is L26 and L28 the former being the MT servicing section with the latter being VASS (old 16 Sqn) L27 was demolished at the turn of the century.

I believe that the PBF and HPS buildings within the Northern HAS site are now used as armouries by 51Sqn RAF Regt?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought the RTP process was to return parts like this in order to keep the fleet supplied with spares?? I can't see how most of those items listed wouldn't come in useful?

You would think so, but perhaps they are damaged or simply surplus to requirements. Perhaps an other poster with more knowledge can answer your question?

Some/most of the stuff is off ZJ804 or ZJ806, both of which are/were twin-sticks. The RAF appear to be going for synthetic training, which means they are getting rid of most of the T3's. Ergo, the stuff that is different/specific to the T-bird doesn't have much RTP use. If they keep the ZK T3's for squadron hacks and press joy-rides then they'll only need spares for 5 or so aircraft (ZK303, ZK379-383?).

Looking at the prices on Ebay, somebody clearly put pretty high prices on what most people might think is worthless c**p! Can't even make a coffee-table out of anything there? Just imagine....(adopt nerdy voice!) "would you like to come round my place & see my 2-seat Typhoon Door 512DB Actuator Outboard No 4?"
