Eurofighter - accidental missile shot.

Post by Tally-ho » Wed Aug 08, 2018 6:57 am

What a headline to start one's day with!

Fighter jet accidentally fires missile in Estonia

"A Spanish fighter jet has accidentally fired a missile during a training exercise in Estonia. A Eurofighter Typhoon from the Spanish Air Force accidentally launched an AMRAAM air-to-air missile in a practice area in southern Estonia on Tuesday. Estonia's military says it is looking for the remains of the missile which was fired during a drill in the airspace of the Baltic country and NATO ally".

Given MSN's track record you should be grateful they've actually found and used a Typhoon photo.....

That is the one bill, the other bill may well be his farewell bill as he says goodbye to his mates and the Spanish air Force. At best he will be lucky to get a transfer to desk flying duties.

I guess that's easy enough to say, but in these open days of Human Factors awareness, Openess, high workload, environmental pressures etc etc, it is far from obvious to simply say remove him (or her).
I would bet that this Pilot will double and triple check switch positions in the future, therefore making him one of the safest pilots in this situation in the longer term.
I recall an incident some years ago where a Swedish FJ Pilot landed with the gear up. After a few sorties in the Simulator, his Sqn Cdr was adamant that he return to flying duties for the reason above.
There may be much more behind the story to date; but to sever a career based on one incident, which, if correctly handled would make an individual a much safer person in the future seems a little hasty to me.
The world of Human Factors is both fascinating and eye-opening.

REHEAT. I could not agree more with your post.Regards, John. Remembering, of course, that an R.A.F. Phantom once shot a Jaguar down. Pilot was reprimanded, and kept on flying duties. [One of my ex- pupils was his 'Prisoner's Friend' at his Court Martial in Germany..]

'promote' the pilot to a desk

Lucky the missile didn't find something to hit

Just had a flashback to my earlier career when I read something about the financial costs involved in training a FJ Pilot.
Again, this would be a huge waste to the system by taking an experienced airman out of the Fg scenario for one incident.
Let's wait and see what happens.
As an analogy, my old boss (a wise old sage), likened a similar event, by saying - "if you bought the worlds most expensive football defender for say £50m, and he unfortunately scored an own goal in the first 10 minutes whilst doing his best to defend his own goal, would you immediately substitute him and keep him on the bench for the rest of the season..."?

Might be worth bearing in mind that even incidents like this are not always pilot error...

I remember hearsay about a crew planting a 14kg practice bomb somewhere near a desert village during the GW1 build up, last I heard the front seater was an Air Commodore! It was always pointed out that if you screwed up they put a ‘RED’ marker on your personnel record, mind you guess what colour marker they put on if you were a star! Yep RED!

many of you guys would be far too young to remember when an RAF Phantom, accidentally shot down a Jaguar ,over Germany.
But these things happen

C24. The Voyager pilot left the R.A.F. certainly. If I remember correctly, he was asked to resign, not because he left his camera blocking the side stick, but because he lied at the subsequent investigation.
