Such a shame, but social media is ruining a hobby, its the same for Motor racing (BTCC, British Gt and BSB)

Social media is ruining a generation and society in general, not just a hobby. It's amazing how something so brilliant and useful in principal is being used so negative and dangerously in practice.

To Tronk11 did you ask the people involved to watch their language as there were young children about, you never know they may have apologised and stopped.
He may have also got a good kicking or worse Thunder, I'm afraid that's the way it is sometimes.

Coming in from a completely different view point from here:

I'm 20, and have grown up around new technologies and social media (which does include this forum as it's a social media platform) and without either I would have struggled to get into this hobby and know as much as I do, and have as much help as I have had. Yes, it is being used wrongly in some places. Mostly, it is used correctly. However, there will always be this one up-man-ship hobby.

I've only been in this hobby for 5 years, and it is a hobby that as you say, it's all about getting "that" shot, and getting the first pictures online to get all the "likes, faves" - Mine are still being backed up and I know they won't have much interest when I upload and frankly I don't care. I do this hobby for me, my Dad and my mates.

Re; ladders - it is a difficult. I don't have a problem, IF you are using them SENSIBLY and STAND AT THE BACK. If there is only a handful of people, then it's less of an issue. Unlike at RIAT where k**bs stand at the front, it's just wrong. Just ask people, and if you're in the way, just move.

Re; swearing - another difficult one, as everybody does it - even parents do in front of kids. Kids listen to pop music a lot of the time and everyone knows how bad swearing can be in that, and YouTube videos etc which often have swearing in. Ask the person nicely to stop or tone down - you'll be surprised they may even stop.

Everyone knew John's would be busy yesterday - Very rare you see A10's!!

I hope not to have upset/offend anyone, just want to offer a different viewpoint from a younger one.
Well said James ,from an oldy .

Theres lots of comments, i didnt think it would generate this responce.

We all do this hobby for different reasons, thats the beauty of the hobby. Number crunchers, photography, patch collecters, model makers, radio listeners, just the enthusiast. Any more?
I think it has people thinking now.

Why didnt i ask them to stop? There was quite a few so felt intimidated. Ive not seen this behaviour before as i generally avoid big events, it used to be a hobby where you helped each other.

Ive even had an apology from a gent on the base, nothing to do with him, but he felt he needed to apologise. I really appereiated it, total class in my opinion.

Not all of the spotters being inappropriate were young, and i cant knock a certain age group. Age doesnt mean your a prat.
Thanks to everyone.

I don't blame you for not saying anything; i'd be the same in that situation. People always have to defend the offenders by saying you could have asked them to stop. But what happens then when you get your head kicked in?! Louts like that don't have any respect for anyone else; if they did they wouldn't be acting like it in the first place. I fully sympathise with what you and others went through.
A sad indictment of modern life :@

I really dont think it would have come violence, far from it. I dont think plane spotters will go to that level.

Have met a few nasty pieces of work in this hobby, thankfully they are in the minority.

Its you that have come into this world,,its not a day out at the park you know,,so get used to it...We have been doing this years,,and come rain or shine we are there,,and all through the winter sometimes waiting hours just to get the shot we want..Not you that just come along on school holidays for a cheap day out and treat it like a picnic..As for the swearing, some of the kids weren't doing to bad at it.

Very true Greg, sadly there are a minority of troublemakers now, have seen a few in the Mach Loop too! Used to be a great place to visit , now it's too popular and sometimes with not so nice people.

Have to say that there is a segment of spotters that are completely charmless, Iv'e had em come up and start scribbling my reg down whilst I'm still vacating me li'l plane and not even return my cheery hello, just waddle off to the next plane with their notepads propped on their fat bellies, no interest in aviation as such, just getting a number and a pic, quite sad

Regrettably these days it's the obnoxious minority that spoil it for everyone. As an aside I was informed by someone at Brunty last Sunday, that the gate at Cad East has now been padlocked by the farmer. Frustrated at idiots who left the gate open and his sheep escaping, the last straw came when his wife was verbally abused after she ask someone to please close the gate. Sad times in this day and age but hardly surprising... :(

Step ladders!
Now, they were involved in one of my earliest aviation enthusiast memories. I vividly remember attending one of my first Mildenhall Air Fetes with my Dad and next to us on the crowd line was a chap with this big aluminum ladder. I learned a few new words that day, as there he was ladder in hand having a row with a family who objected to him blocking their children's view. Sad that it still goes on today!

TankBuster
And there's plenty more where that came from!
