I'm not looking to start an argument, but can anyone recall if there has ever been a year when the Reds didn't achieve their PDA at the first attempt?

Never any doubt that they would make the grade. As their saying goes:

The PDA is issued by RAF officers. Do people really think the RAF would refuse to certify the Red Arrows...?

In the worst case they might have to make some tweaks to their routine and reapply but it's not as if the PDA is a one-shot exam like an A-level.

A-levels aren't one shot. Multiple attempts are allowed, if not encouraged, as with GCSE exams.

I suppose, in a way, each display is like an exam, if something goes awry then the routine is reviewed and tweaked. Anyways, they are now all set for my 52nd viewing season. Not seen each year of course, I missed a few due to work. Love them

If the display was in any way considered as compromising safety then I'd have no doubt that the officer responsible for granting PDA would not hesitate to not approve.

However it doesn't take much to assume that the Reds will design and implement their display within the very same framework of safety that the PDA approver will use, hence there should be no surprises at PDA time and that the routine and such will have been discussed an reviewed "ad infinitum" before that point.

Who says they got it at the first attempt this time around? I seem to remember somewhere in the dim and distant past a documentary showing that they were granted their PDA on a second attempt with the person granting it pulling the display for something he wasn't happy with. They went away, made adjustments and passed at the next time of asking.
Cheers
