Unless you have to transit 500 miles, then stay on station for several hours before returning the 500 miles to your operating base.

Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Beriev A50 is the only option.
Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Would it also make economic sense to base them at the same airfield? Waddington perhaps . . . .PeteHemsley wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:23 amIt makes logical sense to purchase the wedge tail. A massive cut in maintenance costs and engineering support, not to mention parts supply. If the fleet used the same airframe/engine type for AEW and MPA.

Reported in many places that the United Kingdom must hold a fair and open competition before selecting any new surveillance aircraft to replace its current Boeing E-3D Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS), the country’s parliament has said.

Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
was in the RAF E-3 at RIAT... It is OOOOLLLDD... fair play to the flight crew for keeping it going. tough work on the flight deck too, haven't seen a flight engineer and navigation officer seat in the cockpit for years..
Big thing they said was an issue is spares for the aircraft... there's only so much in house repairs and only so much money to get parts manfactured before things burst through into the red...
If they get even 1 Wedgetail (or whichever) fairly quick, they can cull the replaced aircraft for parts and continue with a 1 for 1 replacement quiet smoothly.

Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Wouldnt be surprised if another e3 is retired soon for spares. I think the cost of operating them is through the roof because of spares.
Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Rumour going around FRIAT on Saturday was that the PM was at Fairford to sign the contract hence the need to get the RAAF Wedgetail there despite the problem in Hawaii.
Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Highly doubt the PM was present but, the Defence Secretary was in attendance on Friday.
Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Would an AWACS version of the RAFs Sentinel be an option?
Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Yes but not a sensible one. E-7 is the best option available for us.
Now how about an AWACS based C-130.. If only...

The UK Government held a fair and open competition for the Jet Provost replacement, then had to rewrite AST.412 when the wrong aircraft won.Ghost from above wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:13 pmthe United Kingdom must hold a fair and open competition before selecting any new surveillance aircraft to replace its current Boeing E-3D Sentry
