Almost 68 years active out of a 75 year history - hmmm. An insulting comment on the face of it.

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
Forgive me if I've missed the report:-
are the a/c allocated to 617 to be operated from the QE or do we await further deliveries for a RN squadron?
Thanks,
Freeman

It’s not what you look at that matters. It’s what you see.
Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
I thought all F35 were purchased to be operated from Land or Sea, that's why we went for the least capable of the bunch as regarding range, payload etc.
Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
This is getting sillier! 617 was never an Auxilliary Squadron. They were 600 to 616, less 606 (until a few years ago) and 500 to 504 (originally Special Reserve).

Probably a 9 Squadron fan.....nickowen wrote:Once again, a hostilities-only Auxiliary unit gets the pick of the new kit.

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
All aircraft will be a pooled fleet like the Typhoon is, and whichever squadron (RAF or Navy) needs them at a particular time, will use them.Freeman Lowell wrote:Forgive me if I've missed the report:-

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
If Andy_99 & TeeJay are correct, (would I doubt them?), that the F-35 can operate from land and sea, any chance of a mooring offshore of Lowestoft (preferred) or Great Yarmouth? It would shorten the flight time for sea trials.
617, 716.. It is the people who man the squadron at any time that matter, not a number.

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
This is getting silly.
617 Squadron was never an Auxilliary Squadron. They were 600 to 616 (less 606 until a few years ago) and 500 to 504 (originally Special Reserve Squadrons).
As for the Reapers being 'based' at Creech AFB, Nevada - 39 Squadron is based at Creech but the Reapers are based / operated from Khandahar via satellite comms. I have not seen anything to suggest that an RAF Reaper has ever been in the UK. 13 Squadron are based at Waddington but their Reapers are also based / operated from Khandahar.
I hope this clarifies some of this.

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
Well, except that we withdrew the MQ-9s from Kandahar in 2014, some are now operating from Kuwait for ops over Iraq and Syria. Others are believed to be in their packing cases at Waddington.RJ51 wrote:This is getting silly.

You want the Aladeen news, or the Aladeen news?
Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
617 sq formed at Scampton 21 March 1943 with Lancaster's for specialised operations e.g. Operation Chastise the Dams Raid & other precision operations
out of interest
618 sq formed at Skitten, Scotland 1 April 1943 with Mosquito's to us a modified version of the Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb against German shipping,
but never became operation with this weapon.

Re: 617 Squadron formally stands up
I'm with you on this one Paddy. They've only gone and put it on the commemorative coin - below the Spit - probably to provide a comparison of the best + worst examples of aircraft design. The 3 a/c featured could be considered the Good (Spit), Bad (Camel -because of all the pilots it killed) and the Triple Ugly. This will be plain for all to see if they ever fly one in formation with the lovely Lanc!paddyboy wrote:Doh
