RAF 100 Events

Post by slogen51 » Thu Mar 15, 2018 9:09 pm

Just thinking that it is a shame that there isn't an old school Airshow dedicated to the RAF 100 to be held at a RAF base?

I Know there are mass flypasts at Fairford and over Bucc house which is great but it would have been nice to have a really huge show at say Waddington or Scampton etc with examples of past and present aircraft so the service can really celebrate what it has done and can do in the modern world at an RAF show with an 'at home' feel - bit like the old battle of Britain shows at Abingdon or Finningley. After all 100 years really is once in a lifetime.

I assume RIAT will as usual have a decent RAF participation but that is an existing annual air show not a specific RAF show.

I have read that there will be various Gala nights and Balls at the Albert hall etc but why not hold an aviation focused event and proudly show off the hardware.

Other countries celebrate significant milestones - I see in another topic that the Polish are holding a show this year for their 100th

Don't get me wrong - I am really looking forward to the mass flypast and I know we don't live in the 1970s when there were dozens of shows and hundreds of aircraft and the military had a budget to match.

Sorry to ramble on as Led Zep might say!

There will be a really big RAF 100 event at RAF.... Cosford.

Also I wouldn't call RAF support to RIAT in recent years 'decent'. But times change.

Slogen,
My understanding is the two flypasts are different entities.

The RAF 100 flypast is over Pall Mall on Tuesday 10th July and will consist of up to 100 aircraft.

The flypast at Fairford on Friday 13th July is a "Royal Review" which will be far smaller due to airspace restrictions.

Time of course will tell.

Cosford isn't the big RAF100 event. The focus is on RIAT which will see more RAF invovlement this year and also attract more foreign participation (although dare I say not Russian on this occasion).

That will be a shame.

Su-27 display was supplied by the Ukrainian Air Force, not the Russians.

A smaller flypast for RIAT that is interesting - time will tell as you say.

Think I will definitely be in London for the 10 July.

Let's hope for plenty of the new Shawbury choppers for those of us who don't see the them out in the sticks!.

Wonder if there will be a full dress rehearsal?

That will disappoint everyone waiting on The Mall, not to mention the Royals at Buckingham Palace.... :P

(The Mall and Pall Mall are two different roads...)

Given that the two roads run parallel approx 200 yards apart not that far out really - mind you the trees in The Mall and the buildings in Pall Mall might cause issues in certain places.

I usually go to Northolt for the QB flypast fast jets but the choppers will probably turn north well be before Northolt as do the BBMF.

Early days but I was thinking of Westminster bridge or Waterloo bridge for a unobstructed view.

Hopefully any practice runs will be done over the same course as for the Queen's Birthday flypast.
