F35 noise protest
F35 noise protest
Burlington, Vermont earlier this week.
There is an airfield at the edge of the town and £83 million has been spent upgrading it to accommodate F35s.
The locals reckon it's too noisy for a residential area so staged a protest in town with the noise of F35s played over a PA system to prove their point.
Several arrests were made for disorderly conduct.

Police told the activists they were violating the ordinance and would be getting tickets earlier in the day, Cohen said around noon after playing the noise for six minutes, adding that people had complained about the disruption. "Of course, that's exactly the point," Cohen said.

Re: F35 noise protest
I'm not too surprised. DoD measurements pegged the F-35A as perceptually 'twice' as loud as the F-16C ( F100-PW-220 engine ) on take-off and landing and still a bit louder louder than the 'PW-229 variant.
An unpleasant return to the noise levels of the F-105 and A-6 era!
The F-35 also has a much bassier engine noise which has been blamed for some structural damage to houses in the Netherlands.

Burlington, Vermont is a lovely place. Never thought I would see it mentioned on FC!. Spent a delightful candlelit dinner overlooking the Susquhanna river with my equally delightful wife many, many years [42 to be exact] ago, at The Treadway Inn. Very peaceful place. Can't have it disturbed by noisy aeroplanes!!!, especially ugly ones!!.
Re: F35 noise protest
It is a fantastically noisy beast- and the whine off the lift fan engine is earsplitting over head

I seem to recall that our F35's were going to be based at Lossie, and part of the reason was because of the noise problem.

And isn't one of the plans under consideration for the future that USAFE will base F-35 at RAF Lakenheath and, once it is closed, the land occupied by RAF Mildenhall will be redeveloped for housing?

Yeah we like our peace and quiet. That's the reason the airfield always seems closed to most folk.toom317 wrote:I seem to recall that our F35's were going to be based at Lossie, and part of the reason was because of the noise problem.
Two or three Typhoons at most.
Re: F35 noise protest
That's why the RN/RAF F35's are being based at RAF Marham, some years ago an environmental impact assessment was carried out at Yeovilton, the results showed that despite all the noise reduction items built into the local houses during the Sea Harrier years the noise footprint of the F35B was going to be so large as to make the cost of basing them here untenable.
Re: F35 noise protest
So essentially the folk who say.....
Ah Jet noise the sound of freedom will be drowned out by
blah blah blah Its too noisy.....
Best not move to Norfolk then especially if the RAF ends up with F-35As as well.....

Just came back from Center Parc's Elveden Forest. In their Guest info Book they mention the Aircraft noise from LN & MH & still while we were there Guest's were complaining about it. It's going to get a whole lot worse with the F35's.

If centre parcs have trouble getting people to fill the place I'm sure they'd have takers from here if they dropped the price.

Re: F35 noise protest
If they think Center Parcs at Elveden is bad enough they should try living in Brandon under the 24 approach / 06 departure
Not sure whether I'm looking forward to F-35s or not!

Re: F35 noise protest
I quite agree, but if your comment was aimed at me you've got me wrong. I wasn't complaining - we moved knowing full well that the F-15s were there; in fact they were flying during most of our viewings in the area. I was merely comparing a short stay to permanent residency much nearer to the action. After 45 years of enjoying aviation I have no wish to see the base close.

Hi Nighthawke not aimed at you after 45 years you know what to expect I had it when the TTTE was at Cottesmore but people still whittle about them its the same with QRA flights
Re: F35 noise protest
The other part of the reason is that the F-35 is so noisy that it would drown out the noise of bagpipes!toom317 wrote:I seem to recall that our F35's were going to be based at Lossie, and part of the reason was because of the noise problem.
