Weekend flying by Army.
Weekend flying by Army.
Quick question for those in the know. Why is it that British Army choppers fly weekends and most evenings, yet the RAF and Navy are usually only Mon.-Fri. only?
Regards,
Steve.

Army exercises don't conform to Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.

A lot of the time, it's to support the weekend warriors (TA/Army Reserve).

Army....playing in the weeds, dont care what day it is
Navy.....play with big bath toys, like a tot or two at weekends
RAF.....play with things that fly, weekend starts on a Thursday by booking the 5* hotel for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Just to update this for the second weekend in a row the Navy are up and about, Merlin HC3i ZJ119/C left VL this morning and headed southwest towards Dartmoor, ran out of water in the bathtub I guessGhastly Whisper wrote:Army....playing in the weeds, dont care what day it is

I suspect Ghastly Whisper’s suggestion overlooks that most RAF helicopter flying involves supporting the Army, hence they need to fly when the Army trains. Only pure RAF pilot training happens during the week and even then there’s as much in the evenings and nights as there is during the day. Pumas and Chinooks leave and arrive Benson seven days a week and probably 20 hours a day.

Think that's close to the old adage...
Army manoeuvre under the stars
Navy navigate under the stars
RAF sleep in hotels used by the stars

It subsequently went a lot further than that. Last seen on PP as "JUN422" heading NW in the Newcastle area - possibly routed via Stafford.Seaking93 wrote:Just to update this for the second weekend in a row the Navy are up and about, Merlin HC3i ZJ119/C left VL this morning and headed southwest towards Dartmoor, ran out of water in the bathtub I guessGhastly Whisper wrote:Army....playing in the weeds, dont care what day it is
