Argentina signs deal for Super Eterndards

Argentina finishes deal to buy Super Étendard

Santiago Rivas
IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly

08 November 2017

After long negotiations, the Argentine and French governments signed a contract for the Argentine Navy to buy five Dassault Super Étendard Modernisé aircraft that were retired by French Naval Aviation.

The EUR12.5 million (USD14.5 million) contract includes a simulator and spare engines and all deliveries are to be completed by December 2017.

Argentina hopes to recover half its fleet of ten Super Etendards with the 2nd Attack and Fighter Naval Aviation Squadron to provide air protection during a G20 meeting in Argentina planned for late 2018. The air force’s dwindling A-4AR Fightinghawks are viewed as insufficient for that mission.

Surely there's something better suited to this role than a Super Etendard?

But probably not at an affordable price for Argentina.

Kfir's, or Mirage F.1's at a pinch.

Something that does not pose a potential threat to the Falkland Islands.

Safer Option is to move the G20 Meeting elsewhere & sell 'em some surplus RAF Grobs!
Even if they go down the 'Divine Wind' route with them, they should bounce-off all 3 of our RN. ships? ;)

A few Etendards armed with exocets flying at very low level were devastating in the Falklands.

Were they even engaged by Sea Harriers?

Oh yes

Though i'm sure the Typhoon will be more than up for the challenge :thumb:

I'm not sure - possibly not. They could fire the Exocet from so far away that the SHAR's could never get to them in time. The lack of AEW was criminal.

Why worry about SHARS? 2 Typhoons with 16 missiles = game over

I bet the Falklands islanders would feel a lot happier with a Royal Navy Carrier strike group with some Fleet air arm fast jets embarked.

Without meaning to go too off topic, a SEM can outrun a Sea Harrier and correct me if I'm wrong but the Argentines didn't lose one in the Falklands?

I wouldn't worry about the capability of the Typhoon in comparison to a Sea Harrier, when you put it into perspective... if that was what the original comment was about?

Considering the BVR range of the AIM-120, then double it for the incoming Meteor.. Don't think they'll be an issue.

Olicat, My point was the four Typhoons with 1435 Flt should be well capable even if they are not upgraded to fire METEOR

(Small diversion point - What do you think Typhoons will be doing once the all singing all dancing F-35 hits town) (I know you all look forward to its arrival)

Aside from a probable small minority in Argentina, I sincerely doubt that many of the Argentinian population really gives a * hit about the Falklands. As they are in far more financial strife now than we ever will be

I can say this having met a fair few tourists from the country in London over the last few years... Shock horror! Argentinians like this country!!

Apologies, I quoted your comment to build on it in agreement. I've no doubt that a Typhoon could make much more of a mess of a target than a SHAR

Or..... one submarine launched cruise missile salvo onto Rio Gallegos Airbase to take out the entire Etendard fleet and their base facilities in one go.
