LA Speed Check SR-71

Post by TankBuster » Thu Aug 10, 2017 8:22 am

No doubt some of you guys will have heard this story, but for those who haven't it is well worth a listen  .

It must have been pretty cool being an SR-71 pilot :thumb:

And there's plenty more where that came from!

Brian Shul, his Livermore Labs talk is extremely interesting, some of you may remember meeting him at one of the Air Fates back in the 80s, I do, real nice guy

I have a copy of the book 'Sled Driver' signed by the man himself. Cost me over £250 (new copy, hardback) but well worth it.

Before saying how great this man is, please read http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/ind ... the-sr-71/

This man has never been invited to the reunions. Say no more :ninja:

I have his book also, but only for the photographs.

Met him at Edwards air show 2003.

Despite being busy on his stand selling the wonderful 'sled driver', a book I thoroughly recommend if just for the outstanding photography it has, he stood for maybe 15 minutes in the hot desert sun chatting, talking about the Castle AFB 71, flying etc, then he was gracious to pose for a couple of pictures that I treasure to this day.

What a guy!

Nooooooooooooo!! I would like the half hour I've just wasted reading that thread back! To be fair I couldnt care less about the arguments between all parties involved, but the thread drift is amazing!

Presumably this is the Colonel Graham involved?

Apparently so.

But I think it is telling that it's wider than just Col Graham, by the fact that Shul is not invited to reunions etc.

JIm Jiggens gained more fame by writing off an airframe at an air fete.......

I remember that.
I filmed it departing Greenham Common on Tues 26 July'83 and low over the Peace Women as related in the above tale. Departure time was about 0955 local. My notes say it did 3 low runs but I'd have to watch the film to confirm if they were all over the main gate area. The last run certainly was though, at approx. 1001, after which it made a spectacular climb out on departure back to Mildenhall. This was at the same time as a Portuguese AF C-130 had joined the circuit from the West to land on Rwy29. Wasn't listening to the R/T but the C-130 appeared to make a hard right avoiding turn as the SR headed West.

I believe it was Brian Shul who visited the FIAT enclosure at Fairford 1985, he was a very approachable guy, friendly, and a great and engaging speaker, unusual for someone with a "Big Job". His Book and photos are real must haves. If there was something of the maverick in him, then great! It was a quality that used to be admired ( not always by CO's its true to say ) and aviation history and appeal would be a lot poorer without these Guy's. Was it Shul did the SR-71 burner flyby at alconbury in '86?

I remember that very well. I was sat as close to the Runway as permitted (We were on Litter Picking duty post show with the Scouts, Air Cadet etc..)
