MOAB used

Post by 22A » Thu Apr 13, 2017 5:18 pm

Reports coming in on Fox News (Sky 509) that USAF has dropped a MOAB bomb on Nangarhar province. This is the area of Afghanistan where one US soldier was killed last week. The MOAB weighs 21,000lbs and is pushed out the back of a C130. The blast radius us one mile and even the reports on Fox, who are pro Trump, realise there will be some innocent civilian deaths caused by use of this bomb.
The MOAB is the largest non nuclear bomb in USAF's arsenal and was specifically used as "ISIS has many tunnels in this area".

That is the nickname. Officially it stands for Massive Ordnance Air Blast

Think the GS was heavier in overall weight, but constituted less than half of that as 'explosive'.
Either way, that MOAB is a beast.

Don't know the amount of explosive in the Grand Slam, but reports say the MOAB bomb has 11 tonnes of explosive in it and is the biggest non-nuclear bomb ever used in combat.

I thought the biggest bomb SOG had was the BLU-82 "Daisy Cutter"? Used the same kind of delivery method - palletised and kicked out the back of a Herc :)

From the wonderful Wikipedia.... The BLU-82B/C-130 weapon system, known under program "Commando Vault" and nicknamed "daisy cutter" in Vietnam and in Afghanistan for its ability to flatten a section of forest into a helicopter landing zone, is a 15,000-pound (6,800 kg) conventional bomb, delivered from either a C-130 or an MC-130 transport aircraft. Two hundred and twenty-five were constructed.[2] The BLU-82 was retired in 2008 and replaced with the more powerful MOAB.
So, that'll be 'no' then? ;)

Russia has a bigger version it seems, the FatherOAB, non-nuclear, the blast yield weighing in at 80,000lbs!

The explosion pic here looking decidedly larger than those of the moab! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_of_All_Bombs

Definitely wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing when it goes off. Suppose I could use it to clear the derelict veg patch ready for new sowing though ;)
