Large aircraft escorted?

Post by Zeb » Tue Dec 20, 2016 6:56 pm

Readers raised concern after spotting what appeared to be two jet fighters escorting a large plane over Grimsby this lunchtime.

Callers could only say that the plane was "huge" and that the fighters were definitely flying alongside it, as it travelled towards the coast.

Others described the deep roar of the engine of the "large plane".

True or false or just the usual GT non-story?

It was an exercise, nothing to worry about.

Knowing the press, it was probably a Voyager- always like to make a story out of nothing.

The USAF sometimes get F15s to 'escort' the bigger planes, I know my brother got a shot of 2 F15s escorting a C17 over Norwich and I'm sure I read on here recently someone was listening to a reach flight and the pilot asked if there was any fighters free for an intercept!
The last time I saw an F22 at Lakenheath i DIDN'T photoshop it...

You often get Reach flights asking Swanwick if there's anyone up that would like to intercept them. I guess it's just something different for everyone.

How these people could distinguish between the large aircrafts and the fighters noise surprises me!

It was T2 Aviation's B727 G-OSRB which was operating over the Humber Estuary @ 1850'. It's working out of Doncaster this week.
As already mentioned a flight of 4 x F15's were working Donna Nook around the same time and were making sharp turns to the south of Grimsby to keep in the pattern - all a bit noisy (to some)
