RAF Typhoon fleet.
Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
So,
I'm going to be that guy and ask the stupid questions that people very much will know the answer to on here.
I've read wiki in relation to what the different Tranches mean and the blocks for each tranche. Can someone tell me where we're at in the sense of, are all new deliveries now Tranche 3A? Of the pre-existing jets have they all been upgraded to Tranche 3 standard or are they storing older Tranche 1/2 jets and delivering new ones instead.
I've been out of the loop for a couple of years now and I'm trying to get back in and understand where they Typhoon is at
Sorry if it's already been explained on here, I just didn't have the time to trawl through every page. If it has been explained can someone quote it for me, or if not bring me up to speed please!

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
I'm not an expert on this, but just in case there are no other answers -
Some trance 1 aircraft, T.3s so far, are being scrapped / spares recovered; FGR.4s to be retained for the two new squadrons and some already in store at Shawbury.
Tranche 2 aircraft to remain in service. Have been / can be modified to a standard near, but not completely to, that of tranche 3 a/c.
Tranche 3 a/c are the current deliveries.
HTH, TM74

Thanks tm74sqn!
I thought that might the case. Was at Coningsby yesterday and saw two go out to go into storage at Shawbury.
From what I've been told the T3s are going as they're going to the same training style as F-35 where it's all sim based and first flight will be in an FGR4?
What are the two new squadrons that are coming?

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
To add to the discussion, yes, current deliveries are Tranche 3, Block 25.
The first of the two squadrons identified is 12 squadron. They will be based at Coningsby and their initial responsibility will be to train the Qataris.
Cheers!

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
Think Tranche 2 aircraft can be/are upgraded for swing role capability but unlike Tranche 3 aircraft are unable to be retro fitted with Escan radar and are not Conformal Tank compatable. Not sure about any other differences.

Are there not 3 new squadrons being formed now? I believe the recent statement identified 12 as an addition to the two previously announced but as of yet numbers unknown squadrons.

'Triplex11' arrived at Shawbury 16.30L. Was scheduled to be ZJ930 but not confirmed 100% as it was too dark.
EDIT## Confirmed as ZJ930 on the coningsby section of the forum

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
http://www.janes.com/article/77413/raf- ... t-typhoonsThe UK Royal Air Force (RAF) is to scrap 16 UK Eurofighter Typhoons as part of a project to save GBP 800 million (USD1.13 billion) on the running cost of the service's combat aircraft fleet.
The plans to dismantle the aircraft and harvest spare parts for use on the remainder of the Typhoon fleet were revealed to Jane’s on 29th January by RAF Air Command at High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request.
The project, known as Reduce to Produce (RTP), aims to generate GBP50 million worth of parts from each airframe “back into the supply chain”, according to the FOI data.

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
Keeping track of Tranches and Blocks would have been much easier if the RAF had used the version numbering more logically.
Instead we have to write FGR.4 Tranche 2 Block 8 / 8A / 9 / 10 / 11 / 15, and FGR.4 Tranche 3A Block 20 / 25 and whatnot instead of e.g. FGR.4D and FGR.6B

Re: RAF Typhoon fleet.
Keeping a fleet under one designation is fine with me. Look at the original Chinooks still in service since 1980.
Starting at HC.1 then HC.2 then HC.4 and now they are going to be HC.6As......

The RAF use a perfectly logical system, all in service aircraft are FGR.4 for single seat and T.3 for twins.
Tranche and block numbers are only of use to engineers because externally all the jets are the same in their respective Tranche. Its only what goes on under the bonnet that's different and the way systems or boxes work with each other. The subtle difference between say a block 8 or 9 is not enough to justify a designation change for each block. All the jets have same capability even the twins, so why complicate it with subtypes like 4D or 6B.
