All change? RAF/RN future flight training aircraft
Just found this article online: http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... al-405203/
'The UK Ministry of Defence is to replace the bulk of its current fixed-wing training aircraft with three new types, following the selection of a Military Flying Training System (MFTS) programme bid by KBR/Elbit Systems joint venture Affinity.
Confirming Affinity as preferred bidder for the requirement on 24 October, the MoD’s training system partner for MFTS, Ascent Flight Training, says: “This is a key milestone along the route to a major investment decision.”'
New fleets of Grob Aircraft G120TP, Beechcraft T-6C (above) and Embraer Phenom 100 aircraft are due to be introduced, to respectively deliver elementary, basic and multi-engine training for the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

Re: All change?
Is RAF Linton-on-Ouse stopping as a flying base? According to that article RAF Valley will get the T-6C. Makes sense to have them on one base I guess

Re: All change?
I hope we have the sharks teeth on the noses of the T-6s, it really suits them.
Re: All change?
Great news for Valley but sad for Linton. It would be nice if something big and meaty could be secured for Leeming.
Re: All change?
Hmmm, a Hawk/T-6 combo eh? How many jet trainers are the U.S. after in a couple of years time?
Aviation, breath it in your lungs will stain.

Wouldn't be cheaper for the pilots to be sent to the USA.

Bet the Recent Anti-Noise campaigners are pleased with the announcement,

I hope the RAF call it the Harvard II, I guess this explains the heavy presence at RIAT this year.

Re: All change? RAF/RN future flight training aircraft
Another nail in the coffin of UK aviation. Before long the RAF will have about five bases. We will be flying mostly American aircraft providing lots of revenue for the US and none for the UK. May as well wear USAF markings and become USAF (UK).

Grobs are German and Phenoms are Brasilian. Pretty sure neither are "American", leaving just the T-6C Texan, an aircraft becoming increasingly more common with air forces worldwide, except the USA, who seem not to be their biggest fans.

Don't let facts get in the way Chris!
Anyone know if the PC-21 and new (Phenom-like) PC-24 were in consideration? BAe have already had some involvement with the 21, for what its worth.

PC-21 certainly was. Sadly I think the PC-21 is the new PC-9 ( as in we wanted the PC-9 25 years ago and got the Tincan!). The irony is it has lost to the Texan II which of course is a development of the PC-9!SaudiKev wrote:Don't let facts get in the way Chris!

Phenom - interesting teaching asymmetric flight on an aircraft with the engines that close.
Grob 120TP - there's not that much competition. Of course no one will trust an elementary student with retractable landing gear either. Quite a quick little thing with decent climb performance too. One wonders whether a 3 aircraft FJ training system (Grob/Texan II/Hawk T2) is actually necessary these days - also refer to first point above ref PC-21...
