Wessex can fly again

Post by colt99 » Wed Nov 07, 2018 1:01 am

This was posted on the @NavyWessex twitter page today, its a Wessex mark 5, search and rescue colours

Today the CAA issued XT761 with her permit to fly.
The whole team has worked extremely hard and this is an historic moment that we are all very proud of.
It has been a massive effort from all involved to reach this stage

Wow, Wessex, Whirlwind, Wasp.

And the Sioux and Scout of the Historic Army Aircraft Flight at Middle Wallop

Edited: I should have said that it's great news, I can't wait to see a Wessex flying again.

Grounded, unfortunately. But, what a great formation all those helicopters would make....

Good news indeed. Well done

All that is now required to have a full house would be a Dragonfly and a diddy Hiller

Historic Helicopters own 1 x Whirlwind, 2 x Wessex and 2 x Sea King! The long term plan is to have a Wessex (RN SAR) and a Sea King (RAF SAR) airworthy to accompany the world's only airworthy Westland Whirlwind.

Why not come for a look around, food, drink and a very interesting talk on Wednesday 21 November (postponed from 15 Nov)? See below for details:

The Whirlwind is a Mk10. Anyone know of a flying Whirlwind with the Leonides piston engine? Flixton museum has a non flying one, XN304(?)

https://alvisarchive.com/aero-engines/ For those who might be interested. Always started with a BANG!

C24,

Not any more unfortunately. During the early 1990s, a piston-powered Whirlwind HAS.7 G-AYXT (formerly XK940) made a few air display appearances in a dramatic all-black paint scheme.

During June 2000 she was transferred to The Helicopter Museum and is on static display there.

I Remember that Whirlwind flying, but the paint scheme was rather more Midnight blue, like the early Navy helicopters.

Apologies everyone,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we must CANCEL the Open Evening and Talk by Andy Strachan and Richard Folkes which was due to take place on Wednesday 21 November between 6.30pm and 10pm.

The new date will be publicised ASAP but it is likely to be during February or March 2019.
