REQ: Spotting tips Sigonella

Am passing the airfield tomorrow, en route to Fontanarossa, and fancy having a quick 'look see'. Any tips?

The preserved Italian stuff would appear to be visible from SP69, which runs along the northern boundary of the airfield. Is that the case?

SP104, which runs along the southern boundary, would appear to offer distant views of the operational ramps, via an earth bund. Is that the best spotting location, or are there others? Am hoping the large US Navy codes assist.

Any advice gratefully received.

Was there a few years ago and you seem to have it covered. There was a tree at the western end from where good views of arriving /departing could be had, but I don´t remember which.

In the end, I managed to catch the three preserved aircraft F104, Tracker and Atlantique.

There were also a couple of demobbed Atlantiques present towards the eastern end of the airfield, one with a distinctive Tiger c/s fin.

On the Italian ramp was a Polish Navy M28 and Spanish SAR Casa 235.

On the US ramp were a couple of P8s.

Unfortunately, time did not permit a 'look see' along SP104 (too many goat herders causing their teatime traffic chaos ), but I did catch another P8 inbound whilst at Fontanarossa.

I believe the Tiger Tail Atlantic is MM40115 / 41-77 , I'm sure someone can confirm .

Yes it is (commemorating the 40th anniversary). Further examination of my hastily taken snaps has revealed that the other one was also wearing a special scheme (commemorating the 45th anniversary).
