There isn't much cover at any of the places you can spot from, so if it rains you'll get wet. If you've got a car then you can park fairly close though.
Food - my specialist subject :-) There is a McDonalds and a Morrisons Supermarket/Café near the main gate,a Palmers Fish and Chip Shop and a Café in the garden centre at the North Western End. Not far away to the north is a KFC and a Subway. In the trading estate to the South West off Bunford lane there is a Cafe, and a burger van in the Wickes car park. There are a few other takeaways nearby but I don't think these are open during the daytime. A veritable cornucopia of international and local delicacies in the evenings though.
There are a few hotels in the town centre, but if you want one close to the airfield then the Airfield Premier Inn at the Western end is probably best. Not much to do out there in the evenings though unless the Mighty Yeovil Town FC are playing at home.

Please don't expect much at Yeovil though. If you see more than 3 or 4 helicopters a day you'll be doing very well, and you could see nothing. If you've got a car, concentrate on Yeovilton which is much, much busier, and pop down to Yeovil mid/late morning to see what is out and make a decision then on wheter to wait and see what flies, or go back to Yeovilton.

Re: Yeovil airfield/heliport
Agree with the comments above, probably one of the best places to go is in the overflow car park of Palmers garden centre, close to the airfield boundary and you'll be close to the aircraft when they take off/ land, depending on wind direction of course. Don't expect a lot of activity though, best bet, as mentioned above, is to head to Yeovilton and keep popping back.
