Bag Recommendations

Post by John flightpath » Tue Jan 01, 2019 2:17 am

Hi all.

I am looking for a bag, that can be carried over the shoulder and by grab handle, can accomodate a camera with lens attached, an additional lens and a pair of binoculars. Typically to use on air shows or such like. Must have space for a few accessories and a can of pop or water bottle. I have been looking at the Manfrotto Be Free DSLR bag.
My question is, am I on the right track with this bag or have you got some suggestions of something similar. Also must be a sensible price.

Thanks in advance. And a Happy New Year to each and everyone.

Have a look at a Vanguard Alta Rise38 Amazon currently list them at £69.00
Alternatively have a look at the Lowepro range there 180AW would also fit the bill .

Big thumbs up for the Lowepro range from me as well.

Although my current Lowepro Bag is now so heavy when fully loaded I tend to decant into a smaller bag for all day trips.

This is my small bag which may meet your needs https://www.amazon.co.uk/Case4Life-Rang ... a+backpack

Very reasonable price as well

This is my big bag which when loaded is massively heavy but is comfortable for a whole day at RIAT or walking around the Barcelona F1 circuit once in place

Note I Didn't anything like the current Amazon price for it

Somewhere in between those two Lowepro bags is the Lowepro Flipside 400AW.

In another discussion about bags I posted this photo showing my bag and how I packed it at the time.

The bag will definitely hold a DSLR (I had it with a D7200 and a battery grip and currently with a D500), big zoom lens attached, spare lens and binoculars.

I had the above and thought it was a great bag until the shoulder strap started separating from the main section...

Try not to overload it!!

I think my bag was a Lowe-Pro Compact 35 (got it 25 years ago from work- Lowe-Alpine). 'twas the shoulder bag type with the carry handle. Don't know why I'm writing in the past tense; I still have it! After re-arranging the compartments it would take my 10x50s at one end and camera with short zoom at the other; couple of long lenses in between and still room to smuggle a couple of cans of 'Bud' out of Airfete. It did, however, start to get a bit heavy by then, but on a fine day what did that matter; just remember to fix the side-release buckles to take some of the strain off the zips when using the carry-handle.

Hi,
I use Tamrac, I have a couple, a smaller one for days out and a larger one to cart all my gear around, but as someone said earlier it does get a tad heavy; they come in quite a few sizes so should be one out there to suit your requirements.
You could always have a look at MPB for a second user model, you never know, you could get a bargain.
Good hunting.
Cheers

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Many thanks for all the suggestions and help. I ended up with a Manfrotto Befree DSLR messenger bag. I got it off an ebay shop for £27. Which I thought was pretty reasonable price . It was in the size range I was looking for.

Thanks again
