Anybody using the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD ????

Any comments or comparisons with the Canon 100-400

Can't say how the Tamron compares to the Canon 100-400 as I am a Nikon user, but I have been using the Tamron 100-400 on a full-frame Nikon D610 for a few months now and I have no complaints whatsoever with it.

I bought the Tamron to replace an ageing Nikon AFD 80-400mm lens. Do I regret not paying the extra few hundred pounds for the latest Nikon AFS 80-400 instead? No!

But of course only you can decide whether the Tamron lens is a worthwhile buy for your needs.

Where were you thinking of buying it from ?

Reason for my question is. It is currently for sale at most large camera shops for around £749. If that is your budget, have you thought about the SIGMA 150-600 to give you that little extra range ? (very similar price)

I have just completed a part exchange of a Canon 100-400 Mk1 (it was about 8 years old) with a new SIGMA 150-600 and I am so pleased with the new lens

Maybe, because of it's age, but I never found the Canon very sharp, especially at the 400 end. Whereas, I am finding the SIGMA very sharp, even at top end

Just for further info. I see the Tamron is on sale at Amazon, so that is why I wondered what your budget was

I'd second what Eagle1 said, you have 200mm of extra zoom which is very useful.

Sometimes its not all about the total focal length, I had a Tamron lens up until earlier this year and it was pin sharp.I was very happy with , but I got tempted by another lens and sold it to part fund the new one. However, I wouldn't hesitate in buying another Tamron.

I agree it's not all about total focal length. I believe I could have got the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens for about the same price as I paid for the Tamron 100-400, but I went for lighter weight over longer reach. I'm happy with my decision.

If anyone is interested, in WH Smith today I saw what I assume is the latest issue of Digital Photographer magazine (no date on it, but Issue 207, pic of a stag on front cover).

It has a test of 100-400mm lenses and features those from Canon, Sigma and Tamron, along with the Nikon AFS 80-400mm lens.

Thanks for the replies. Currently running a Canon 100-400 Mk1 and a Sigma 150-500. Both are heavy and large, was thinking about something light weight and easier to travel with.
Will check out the magazine reports.
