Canon 7D mkII Settings

Post by Mark » Fri Jul 06, 2018 11:26 am

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to the 7D mkII and wondered what your preferred airshow settings were, Focus point expansion etc?

I used mine for the first time at Cosford and didn't get that many keepers. I know Cosfords a nightmare anyway due to the position of the Sun (not a problem on previous visits as the weather is usually pants.. ).

I'm using a 300 F4 L series prime and a 1.4x converter.

Many thanks in advance

These have served me well:

Propeller aircraft & helicopters (user settings c1)
shutter priority Tv mode
iso 100
f8 ‘lens sweet spot’
1/250 but adjust from 1/60 to 1/320

Jets (user settings c2)
aperture priority av mode
iso 200 (adjust to give shutter speed)
f8 ‘lens sweet spot’
1/750 plus ….

af1 menu AI serv0 AF for moving subjects - case 5
af2 menu al servo first & second image priority
af4 menu FOCUS 9 Central zone points
drive mode: low speed continuous shooting - some use high but you can run out of buffer with identical shots in a Q...
auto white balance

Hope this helps.

Thanks Keith,

The 9 central zone points surprises me, I've been using single point. Do you think this has improved your keeper rate?

Think central 9 is better, with a single point you can struggle with low viz smooth surface or multiple aircraft in a single shot, ie single point between a pair.

I may give that a go come airshow season and see how I get on..

It may help with my keeper rate with the 150-600 sport too..

Thanks Keith

Thanks very much for the info Keith I'll make a note of the settings remember to set everything up for the next trip.

There's so much stuff to learn with the new camera.
