Old model cameras

Post by Pune » Sat Jun 30, 2018 7:27 pm

Hi Folks,
I've often wondered what happens to the 'old model' cameras when updated models are introduced..Canon 5D11 - 5D111 and then to 5D1V for instance, where do they go?
Any info'.
Cheers
Pune

The camera manufacturer will discontinue making them, and some people who own them will often sell there old model then upgrade to the newer model.

I still have two of my film cameras : OM10 and a Pentax P30

My old Zenith was lost in a car theft I think.

I gave my old film cameras (Pentax S1A), a B&W enlarger, other darkroom equipment, etc, and a couple of Canon DSLRs and CF cards to the local adult education college for use by the photographic courses they run.

As with anything, it's maximum worth is limited to how much money somebody will actually give you for your old hardware. Some people think that new cameras come with an ability download, only to find the more things to adjust, the more you can ffff mess-up!
'tm74sqn' has a commendable attitude to surplus equipment & I myself favour equipping younger people with an interest in photography. (that extends beyond mobile-phone selfies!)
I have a perfect example of an EOS 1D, new bypass filter, new shutter-box (good for 250,000 actuations?) having done just 12 to test the service & overhaul after my camera-bag fell 45 cms onto soft muddy grass! :O It took forever to go through the insurance process & I bought another camera body. The Loss-adjuster just couldn't face replacing new for old with a premium Canon Product....so they blew £1,400 on documented repairs.
After the time of repair, a well known camera shop offered me £70 for it, so I decided it would stay in stock for a deserving cause. I suspect much old surplus camera gear sits in the cupboard waiting for the Missus or Will Executor to bin-it?

Thanks for the replies guys but I must have worded my question a little vaguely, I just wonder what the manufacturers do with the old models they have in stock, do they just recycle or scrap them?

At a guess I would suggest that they clear their stocks before launching the new models. Alternatively staff bonuses - in which case I'm off to get a job at Canon

They sell them off as per usual, it’s common to see both the older model and it’s direct replacement on the selves together for several months until the older model stock is exhausted. The older model will normally get discounted over this period.

Agreed! When you see a lens or camera body getting heavy discount &/or cashback, you can be sure it's about to be replaced by the next upgraded/new model. You will also see the Argos type of retailer selling the 'old' models as 'flagship' items when the latest is on sale in specialist photographic outlets. Most enthusiast & professional photographers are sufficiently informed by the web & social media these days to know when upgrades & new models are about to be released?
