Which lens to take?
Which lens to take?
A which lens to take question. I'm going to R.I.A.T in July and will be in one of the enclosures, which is I think about 150-200 feet from the flight line . I have the Oly E-M1 MK2 and am taking the 12-40 F2.8, I also have the 40-150 Pro zoom and the 300 F4 and the MC14. Given where I'll be, would the 300 be too much or would the 40-150 with the MC14 which will give me 420mm eqv @F4 be the better option? Thanks for any input, Geraint.
Re: Which lens to take?
Hi Geraint
I'm not personally a big fan of teleconverters. Although I understand the fact of that they can create a completely different lens with minimal extra weight in your bag.
For take off shots and display teams the 40-150mm on its own would be good but for in flight shots the 300mm would be handy. Everything seems to be a little further away these days.
If it is a weight carrying issue, then the 40-150mm and MC14 would definitely be the option as they offer more flexibility.
I will be taking a Nikon 17-55mm(Static Park) and Sigma 150-600mm(Flying) at a crop factor of 1.5x.

If you're in an enclosure don't they offer secure bag storage ? If so I'd be taking the lot

Re: Which lens to take?
Personally I would make sure you have the longest zoom capability with you. You may only be 200 ft from the centreline but, the aircraft can cover a lot of distance in seconds and you'll be able to catch some nice angles with the longer zoom.
