1.4 teleconverter on a Nikon 300 f4 prime

Post by luke28 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 5:36 pm

Alright chaps, hopefully using this opportunity to tap into your collective knowledge.

I currently have a Nikon 300 if-ed f4 prime, I'm looking into adding a 1.4 converter to it, does anybody have any experience with this combination? Does the converter add a noticable lack of sharpness? Does it slow the autofocus down much?

Thanks for any input

I've got a Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR with a Nikon AF-S TC-14E III Teleconverter.

Only taken shots on approach at Marham but I was amazed how little it made in image quality and AF.

Have read that TC-17 etc does slow the AF down.

Hope that helps.

For sharpness it depends on the quality of your converter. I would not waste your money on cheap telecons, as they are usually poor. If you can afford it then stick to Nikon, (but very expensive new, but not so bad 2ndhand), or as an alternative try Kenko Pro.
I use a 2x kenko pro with a nikon 300 f4D lens for bird photos and also have about 6 TC20Es (I sell them on Ebay). Please note these nikon 2x telecons were designed for use with their f2.8 range of lenses and will not work or even fit many of their other lenses.... hence I use the kenko pro. I am unsure what the score is with nikons 1.4x telecons, but you need to consider compatibility with your lens first before even thinking about a nikon.

Very Sharp combo this Nikkor lens and Nikkor 1.4. Owned it for years and very happy with it. Try to add the extra stop for even sharper results.
