Canon 100-400L issue/repair info'

Post by Pune » Fri Oct 20, 2017 9:11 am

Hi Folks,
I have an issue with my 100-400 L Canon lense, it has 'locked up' and will not zoom, focus is a tad iffy too.
Is this a known issue with this lense and could anyone advise of very reputable repairer.
Cheers in advance.

If it is the old series and not the mark 2 the zoom can jam up. Mine did and it went back to canon for a repair, cost me about £200.
have a look at previous posts, I think there are some recommendations in previous posts.
Canon 5D Mk4 plus long lenses, and lots of hope!

Yep, agreed. The Mk1 is famous for the bearings failing, usually showing a black grease mark around the Zoom barrel. A colleague of mine also had similar issues, but that was 'operator error' because the friction damper ring wasn't set to "off"!
Canon UK do a fixed-price repair on this & the subject is well-documented on this & UKAR Forum.

There are a few places to get this done - I got the bearings replaced and had mine serviced prior to any issues due to the numbers of others reporting them

Give me a shout if you don't have any luck and I will look out the receipt / report

Cheers

Had mine repaired at Colchester camera repairs. Have used them on a couple of occasions and always been happy with the work carried out.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=A.M.+ ... 8&bih=1316 - Just so you can see the good reviews.

Alan - A.M Technical Services http://www.cam-rep.co.uk/

I've had a few items fixed by him. A really nice guy who is a Train Spotter not a Plane Spotter!

Drop him an email and explain the problem and he normally replies with a price. You won't be ripped off either. He quoted me > £150 for a complex lens repair, which I agreed to. When I went to pick it up he only charged me £30 as it was simpler than he first thought.

Agreed! Very good price. Canon UK are a little more, but will repaint the barrel for minor scratches, or replace for more serious abrasion within their fixed-price. :D
Having seen on here the type of person Alan @ A.M Technical Services is, no doubt he can do a similar job if required. :thumb:
