Used EOS-1D MK2
I'm looking for an EOS digital SLR for occasional use with a Canon 100-400L lens, mostly of large American aircraft and maybe some helicopters going overhead.
Can I do much wrong by buying a used EOS-1DMK2 for £200 from one of the reputable camera dealers?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Used EOS-1D MK2
I think you might find your self a bit limited as I understand the camera you mention is only 8Mp and is also a Full Frame camera, so you would be limited to 400mm with not very much cropping room.

8.3 megapixel, 1.3x focal length factor and 45-point AF.

Appologies I didn't know it was 1.3x crop factor I assumed all the 1D series were full frame cameras, so that should help with the 400mm end of the zoom, 45 point AF points is good also.
I know they are built like a tank solid construction.

Thanks. I think I'd rather buy a 12-year old tank than a 5 year old higher spec consumer body.

Have you considered the 1D III as an alternative? The prices on these models are coming down somewhat, 10.1 mp, not quite full frame (28 x 18 CMOS) but still big enough to crop - still a bigger sensor than the 7D and 10 fps to boot.

Thanks roughcutter - a "well used" 1D III is £309 though, a respectable one £450 - quite a jump?

Re: Used EOS-1D MK2
True, but like Cornish Guys stated they are built like tanks and the shutter count can run as long as at least 250,000. For the sake of a couple of hundred more...
Re: Used EOS-1D MK2
for a couple of hundred quid they are a bargain. the mk2 N version has they slightly larger screen and slightly bigger buffer and I wouldn't worry too much about being only 8mp.

Re: Used EOS-1D MK2
Thanks Martin.
A month after getting my used EOS-1DMk2N for £200 from London Camera Exchange, I have to say it's probably the best value for money camera item I've even had.
A quick shutter count check shows it's done about 1/8 of the expected 250,000 exposure lifetime, it's built like a tank so despite a few marks on the case it's still working fine and the photos I've taken with it have been faultless (other than the fact there's a fool operating it!).
I've got 8GB and 16GB SD cards yet I've never needed to take more than a few hundred without returning home. Likewise, the supplied battery is good for around 1,000 shots and so is the £25 3rd party battery I bought from Amazon.
The only two problems I've had so far were that it's height makes it difficult to fit in a camera bag that costs less than £150 or is smaller then a mountaineering kit bag. My £80 Manfrotto backpack bulges to have a tight fit where the body is in it but it's still usable. The other challenge is that even trying to use the very high speed automatic shooting fills the buffer before you can blink, the 22-frame RAW burst is over before you've started almost!
So far I've been using it with 17-40L and 100-400L lenses, all good.
Hopefully the image tag below works for everyone?

I have a five-shots only since renewed 1D Mk II, a 1D MkIII & two 1D Mk IV bodies. I have the absolute fastest SD. cards Sandisk manufacture..... & in none of the bodies noted do they allow the burst mode to perform to Spec' in RAW mode!
Put a Sandisk CF. card in the second slot & select that card, Hey presto! the buffer empties much quicker & allows maximum burst to regenerate before you can use it all up.
I have no alternative than to put SD, cards in the second slot for static shots & emergency capacity, where something is better than nowt!.... SD. cards are crap!
