Canon EF-S 18-55 is stm Lens.

Post by John flightpath » Tue Feb 14, 2017 10:22 pm

Does anyone on here use the above lens. Just want to know how you rate it for Statics and museum shots.
Was looking at something wider but wondering whether this one would do the job. I also know that the wider you go
the more barelling effect you get.

Many thanks

Hi John - I've been using this lens for a few years. It is far better than the older (non-IS) version. Obviously not L-glass quality but I'm satisfied with it. I'm not an "airshow goer" but I have used it at close range on a few airfield visits and during a trip to Duxford achieved a fairly high success rate down to 1/4 second hand-held. Whilst there are better lenses available, if you're on a low budget or, like me, cannot justify the extra expense then this lens is adequate for the job.

Thanks Nighthawke, I really appreciate your views on it. For the money involved, it maybe all I need.

Many Thanks

Its a bit late, But I use the Sigma 17-50 2.8. Around £250-300. But really worth the money. With the fast aperture, its great for low light. Not sure what the Canon "kit lens" is like but its a great step up from the nikon 18-55.

Thanks Lewis, I got my self a Canon one now. It was a question of meeting the happy medium. It does the job I need it to do. However I was looking at the Sigma as I am very impressed with their lenses. I bought one of their APO DG OS 150-500 ones last year and that is the dogs doo dahs. Trouble with me is, show me lenses, its like a kid in the sweetie shop lol.

Thanks for the tip though, much appreciated.

Best Regards
John 'flightpath'.

No problem, I'm sure it will be just as good if not better! A 150-500 is next on my hit list!
