Canon APS-C Cameras

Post by TF104G » Tue Jan 17, 2017 10:02 pm

Hi, I've just purchased a new 7D Mk2 and was wondering which wide angle zoom lense do other users recommend for shooting static aircraft at shows?

Is there such a thing as one lense covers all from Grob to C17?

Your thoughts appreciated prior to spending the hard earned cash.

You may like the idea of a Sigma 50-500...

50mm APS-C is 80mm full frame equivalent - hardly wide angle Chris :)

Probably looking at something from around 17/18mm upwards - kit lens 18-55 or 18-135 or for more money maybe Canon 17-85. Not an airshow goer these days but depends on budget. Chris' suggestion is a big lens to carry around but does mean only carrying one but as I mentioned it is not what I would call "wide" at the bottom end.

Just a thought for starters - I'm sure others will have their own favourite glass.

Thanks for the quick replies - I've been looking at the following lenses as my wish list:-

EF-S 15-85 F3.5 and / or the EF 24-105 F4

With the eventual purchase of the Canon EF 100-400 F4/5.6 ISS ll or similar.

A lottery win would be handy :)

I understand the 15-85mm lens you mention is very good.

I have been using Tamron 16-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD on Canon 70D and find it covers Grobs to C5 and everything in between. The only thing to be aware of is high contrast edges can display some chromatic aberration, this is though fairly easy to remove in post. Wex selling at £399 http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-tamr ... t/p1553135

24-105 on a crop sensor comes out as 38 at the wide end, so not that wide really, and that lens at the wide end does distort a little bit. Easily dealt with in post - Lightroom does it very well - but ideally avoided in the first place. I use a 10-22 on my 7D1 in tight spaces, as long as you're not too close it's a good combo.

I'm not sure why you would want to spend that much on an all-purpose lens that covers that much zoom. It's not like you don't have time to change lenses in the static park. There are plenty of relatively inexpensive wide angle zooms around - I got the one I mentioned above for £185 from Wex - it seems to be a little more now, but they must also be available second hand.
