Question: Canon 7DMk.II + 100-400Mk.II with 1.4 extender
Hello everyone
I've heard that you can use an extender with the 7DMk.II in combination with the 100-400Mk.II.
Are there some people who already tried making pictures using this combination?
I'm considering using it at the Belgian Air Force Days in Florennes, but only if the results are still good.
How does the AF behave with the 1.4 extender fitted, is it still fast enough for tracking aircraft? Which focus points you can use, only the centre point?
And how about the image quality, do you loose a lot or is it still ok?

Thank you for the reply sir!
I guess I will try that combo during a couple of displays at the BAFD if the weather plays ball

Hi FalconFlare. The review above is a little out of context for your proposed scenario...Excellent light & timid woodland creatures that aren't moving?..are not what you're doing.
I suggest that before Florennes you take your 1.4 combo' 230 metres from a motorway & shoot some fast-moving trucks & cars on a less than perfect-weather day? Repeat without 1.4x to compare (at home) a cropped image to the 1.4x image. You can also assess focus-speed, etc on a moving object. That would give you a more accurate view of the performance of the combination? I've tried it on a 1D Mk IV & it works, the 7D Mk II can require more 'setting-up' customisation I'm thinking?? HTH.

A friend of mine used this combination (7d and 100 - 400 Mk 2s plus the converter) a couple of weeks ago and shot (not literallly) a sky lark on the fence upright at Mildenhall - great results - OK it was not moving at the time but the detail at 100% zoom was crystal on the screen display

Sounds like good advice to me. Get to know your kit before you use it for what it is intended for.Supra wrote:Hi FalconFlare. The review above is a little out of context for your proposed scenario...Excellent light & timid woodland creatures that aren't moving?..are not what you're doing.

Although I'm still toiling away with the 7D mk1, soon after I got it, I ditched my 1.4 TC, as I was getting sharper images without it and better results overall by cropping to compensate for the reduced reach.
This may not be the same for your combo but don't just assume that a larger image in the frame, that does not need any cropping, will end up sharper than one that does need some cropping.
Re: Question: Canon 7DMk.II + 100-400Mk.II with 1.4 extender
A bit late to the party I know but may be of use to others reading this. I hired the 1.4x Mk3 for a weekend, to use with the 7DII/100-400Mk2 and found it challenging to the point of unusable most of the time for tracking fast moving aircraft. This being due to the reduced 'matrix' of AF points. I'm sure it's a matter of practice and maybe accepting that you're not going to capture every pass, and the shots I did get I was happy with.
