Start off with something like this, see how you get on, if you get the bug then I'm afraid it's 'big money time' and something along the lines of the 100-400 zoom, or the 'bigma'

You'll need a bigger lens than that this year, Brian.

Sigma do a good 70-300mm which is very capable for a beginner. Approx £80 from Currys/PCWorld.

Try the Canon EF 70-300 USM Lens or the Canon EF 55-250 USM Lens. Some have IS ( image stabilisation) Look on ebay for the shop called 'The Photographers bag'. They are based in Dudley. Good quality used lenses. Also check out Wexphotographic.com. Price without IS £70 - £100. With IS probably add about £20 per used lens on a used example. They are lightweight lenses and the auto focus is very good. Note that IS does not work when 'panning' your shots. The motion sensor automatically turns the IS off.It comes back on when you stop panning. However if you are blessed with steady hands you won't need it. If you eventually decide to go for something like Brian is showing off above, you'd better re mortgage the house lol.

Hope this is of help.
Cheers
John 'flightpath'.
