Telephoto 300mm plus advice

Post by DanSeaman » Sun Apr 17, 2016 8:28 am

Hello again guys,
I'm currently looking at spending some money on my gear (600D sigma 18-200 OS and Canon 70-300 IS USM)

ive been reading review after review of the:

Canon 100-400 IS L MK2 (popular choice I know) would have to be second hand

Sigma 150-500 OS Sport and contemporary

Sigma 150-600 OS

Tamron 150-600 VC

I have around a £1000 to play with but all the reviews/comparisons don't give a clear winner

Can I have other people's opinions to see if there is a clear favourite.

Many thanks

Recently bought the sigma 150-600mm sport, only used a few times but very impressed with it on a 7d mk2

Most all zoom lenses are a compromise in some area or other. I have a Canon 70-200 IS L MK2 & that was my 'go-to' Lens as it's compromises weren't evident. I have used the following Lenses.
Canon Mk 1 100-400 leaves Canon 70-300 IS USM for Dead !
Canon 100-400 IS L MK2 is in a different league to previous model. Excellent performance throughout the range. Used my colleagues.... bought my own!!!
Clearly you will need to keep your 18-200 or something similar, as the 100 -400 on an APS-C 1.6 crop-factor (APS-C ) is too big for closer action when 'zoomed-back' (=162mm)
I use the Canon 24-105mm on a 1.3 CF Body (APS-H ) to 'overlap' the 100-400 Mk II at the shorter focal lengths. HTH.

I've been asking the same question to camera shops over the last couple of weeks and every time they recommend the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, if you have the extra cash then maybe the Sport version but the shops I spoke to said there was very little improvement over the cheaper version. No one has recommended the Tamron 150-600.

Canon would be the clear winner image wise but you are giving up 200mm, however you need to ask how yourself often would you be using it beyond 400mm.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replys :) it seems the Canon 400 is a favourite, followed by the Sigma 600. Can anyone show me an airshow image with the zoom difference between 400mm and 600mm? Just wondering in reality how much closer to an aircraft you can get with the extra 200mm.

Cheers

600mm at lakenheath on my last trip was very useful to have, if you go for the sport as I have make sure you're fully aware that you'll be handling a significant weight compared to contemporary version.

Good luck with your choice

The Canon400mm f5.6 L prime is stunning and well within you budget.
good alrounder is the Sigma 50 500mm but over budget new.
