I tried both the Sigma C and the Tamron at RIAT last year. I definately preferred the Sigma as it seemed to have the edge of the Tamron but it's very much personal choice. I went and bought the Contemporary last Saturday so not really tried it out but for the half hour spent walking around taking random shot the results look promising. I own a couple of Sigma lenses and can't fault them...the value for money is excellent. I'm sure Tamron owners will say the same about theirs though. Another reason i went for the Sigma was the USB dock. This allows a number of tweaks to really dial the lens in.
There's a good thread on Talk Photography about the Sigma C. It's mainly bird shots but they're a few planes shots which show what it can do.

Thanks for the update. I think you might be right... It'll depend on what you're used to, to some extent.

I have Sigma 150-600 Sport... It's a fantastic lens.
I also have 300 f2.8 Mark II.
Sigma sharper at 600 than this with 2x mark III extender
