not being a Canon owner, and since you have stipulated the Canon brand, how about this one at £389.......... ;)

I am surprised you let your STM go, it is a stella lens possibly not the range of the 400 but made up for by its IQ and wide open.....

How about a Canon 24-105 L, sure you can find a second hand one at that price. More than happy with mine.

Can't fault it's performance so far.

I've got a 24-105/4L and it is a superb lens, but on a crop sensor 24mm actually comes out more like 40mm so not actually that wide. I've got a 10-22 EF-S (no crop factor) as well so I have a gap in my focal lengths. I very rarely get to airshows these days so am a bit out of touch as tyo how close or not you get to the aircraft in the static parks. My suggestion would be to hire a 24-105 for a day and try it somewhere where you can simulate the shots you want to take and see how you get on. Or find a local fellow Canon user who's got one and see if you can borrow it. Having said all that if you can get a new one for £465 as above then I very much doubt you'd regret buying it. It's a tough (if heavy) lens, had mine a few years now, used in it all sorts of environments and situations, never let me down, and the IS is very useful too.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Go for the 24-105mm it's L glass for a start so it's top quality. You can pick these up new for under £500. Try places like digitalboy.co.uk or panamoz, they may be imports but the service is better than some photographic companies in the UK
The last time I saw an F22 at Lakenheath i DIDN'T photoshop it...

Consider this Tamron which is a good wide angle for a crop sensor and will leave you with plenty of change in your pocket.

So you'll probably want something that starts at around 18mm, especially as you're using a cropped sensor body. I used to use a Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens which I was very pleased with - sharper than the kit lenses and with extra reach (85mm compared to 55mm or similar), and with image stabilisation. It's now been replaced by the EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens which gets decent reviews, and is available for under £500. A strong candidate I think?

I get a lot of my stuff from them and have been doing so for about 5 years, they have not let me down yet.
