Canon 100-400 repair / service

Post by edarter » Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:26 pm

Hi,

My 100-400 could do with a bit of a service / repair as the friction ring is no so worn it no longer has any effect and doesn't lock the lens at all. I was wondering what the general concensus is on where is best to get this done. I would need it back for the beginning of May as I'm going to Abingdon air and county show.

A very quick search of the forum suggests this chap is good :
http://www.cam-rep.co.uk

But no mention of my lens specifically on his website and interested to see what other options there are as well.

Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed
I have used Lehmanns in Stoke-on-Trent and found them to be very good.

Hi,
I used this lovely guy last year when I had a bit of an accident with my 5d mk 2 and 17-40, he repaired them both at very reasonable costings, worth asking I think.
Good Luck.

Hi Ed,I have had the same problem recently with my 100-400.I sent my lens to Canon at Centennial Park,Elstree,on April 7th this year and I received it back yesterday the 15th.April,having been repaired, calibrated and serviced. It cost me £93.68 plus postage and Vat.If you use them make certain you print out a returns form from there Web page, and send it with your lens as this saves time.Hope this helps,Cheetah.

YES IT IS !! If you have one of these lenses, when the bearings go DON'T waste your time and money with "canon approved" or through your camera shop, go direct to Canon as said. When my bearings failed for the umpteenth time, I rang Canon and bitched, and they told me about this service, (lens had already been sent to Johnstones in Scotland who wanted the fat end of £300) had lens returned and sent to Elstree, returned in as new condition for about £130 including postage, with new barrel too as the old one was all scratched. Ring Canon and ask for "fixed price repair" I wish I had known sooner, would have saved me hundreds of £ previously, but that's life!

I rang Elstree when my zoom lock went but they wanted 120 quid for just that so have lived with it ever since.
If they do fix this for less than a ton then please report back as I may well get it serviced ahead of plans to PX it in future.

Well finally got through to Elstree and they were less than helpful. Was told they can't give me a rough idea of cost at all and would need to send it in. I would also need to put a repair limit of £250 on it, meaning that if the repair goes beyond that they will call me. Kind of irrelevant at that point because they will have the lens in pieces which renders it useless.
You guys that have managed to get info out of Elstree, did you mention anything in particular or did you send your lenses in for a quote? I was very clear that I just wanted a ballpark figure but the girl was adamant that I would need to send it in first.

Thanks

My 100-400 is currently at Elstree for a repair. It looks rather like as this is a known fault if the lens goes in for another repair which requires disassembly (in my case the IS unit has failed - and it also apparently requires a "Power Diaphragm Unit" - which I'm guessing relates to a failed USM unit also - they deal with the issue of the zoom ring at the same time - my estimate comes in at a hefty £364 inc vat but there is no separate charge shown for the Zoom ring/band replacement - just the fixed price items for the other two bits.

An update to this thread, Jan 2017

Dropped off my EF100-400L at Parks Cameras to get the zoom lock ring repaired and serviced. £156 inc. Parts, Labour & VAT from Canon UK at Elstree.

Not bad at all.
