EOS 7D

Post by H.A.Bucken » Wed Oct 29, 2014 2:57 pm

I notice a lot of equipment credits:- Canon 7D, especially when 'getting inside the cockpits' in Wales or the Lune Gorge. So why are there a couple second-hand in a shop in Kendal? Bodies only @ £600 each, and there's a Canon LF F2.8 lens @ £1250.
My graphing days are slowly winding down now and won't be making the change from 'wet film'.

There will be a glut of 7D's for sale soon cos the Canon 7D mk2 comes out tomorrow

I think the standard kit for a aviation and bird photographer is the Canon 7D and Canon 100-400mm lens

(I know not everyone has this setup but its the most popular  )

It's the same on this side of the pond and being a Canon 7D ex-owner my feeling is even though it was a huge step up
from the 50D it still has a bit of a noise issue. I personally didn't shoot anything over 1000 iso and even at that will
use my photo editing software to clean some of it up. My happy max is 400 iso and living near Vancouver our winters
are such that I have to crank it up. Many owners complained about the noise issue so that could account for a lot of it.

Another reason could be that some people bit off more than they could chew and never learned how to use it. It's an
expensive lesson for those that jut put the thing on auto and trust the camera to make the shot.

I really dislike noise in my shots and because of that I stepped up to a full frame 6D. Unfortunately that came at a cost
by way of reach. The 7D has a APC-S sensor giving a factor of 1.6x the focal length of the lens. The 6D put the brakes
on me using my 70 - 200 f2.8 IS (now sold ) and even my 70 - 300 L on aircraft photography because it's 1 to 1. The reach
issue forced me back to using my 100 - 400mm. 100mm doesn't sound like much but to me it makes a difference quite a bit
of times. A lot of people get their knickers in a knot because they say it sucks in a lot of dust. I laugh.... a lot.... when I hear that
because it's a darn nice lens in the hands of someone that cares to learn how to use it. I really like that lens a lot but because
it's a light hog I don't use it on a heavily overcast day. Dust has never been a problem on any of the three I've owned. Buy high
and sell low seems to be a motto for some reason.

Canon is going to be releasing their new 7D MkII sometime in November. The original 7D has a 18 mp 1.6x sensor and the new
body has a 20.2 mp 1.6x sensor. The 6D features a 1-1x 20.2 mp sensor but the new 7D is supposed to be new and improved 1.6x.
Because of that and a few other issues I'll be buying one as soon as it hits the shelves.

Just my two cents..........................

I was wondering what lens you were thinking of. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is a fantastic walk around
lens for those that are looking for that focal length. The IQ is incredible and it's focus is fast and bang on.

This was pretty much my first shot with that lens. I was lucky to be standing just off to the side at the end
of the runway which post 911 doesn't happen often.

$1900.00 + TAX in Canada will scare a lot of people away I think.

I think you're right. It's actually a nice set-up once you get to know it.

I had a 7D and it was as noisy as a squadron of F15s taking off! went back to the supplier cos of that!

I have a 6D and it matches my old 1DX for noise, its superb  I will get the 7D mk2 in a few weeks

Skip a very skilled photography forum friend pre-ordered a 7D mk2 and was able to pick it up today. He bolted his 400mm
to it and zipped out to his favorite swamp and cracked off a few frames. He was too excited to bother setting it up so he
used it fresh out of the box. He posted some of the shots to the forum and I gotta tell you the IQ was stunning. I'm just in
the process of moving down south and as soon as I'm settled I'll have on in my hands. That should be no later than 21 sleeps. :thumb:

I've got to ask the question...........WHY would you ever go up to 1000 ISO? Unless you're taking pictures of the moon!

If you are using iso 1000 for the moon you are doing it wrong! I've shot as iso 12800 before, not every situation allows shooting at low iso, not with a long lens anyway!

Because sometimes it's darn dark! At one point last week I was shooting ISO6400, f/5.6 and 1/13th for work.

Most of my photography is gigs, shooting lower than 1000 would be very rare, generally 1600+ for me, even using a 50/1.4.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Probably because with modern processors, you can! Even on my 400D I was shooting at 1600 last night and, although not great, with a reasonable lens and close to the subject got acceptable keepers. My wife has a 700D and that is far less noisy. It's a case of what works for you...or not.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Canon 100-400mm L Mk.II is also on the horizon, or already out.

Which in simple terms means, anyone can pick up a bargain on the 7D Mk.I, and 100-400mm L Mk.I. Which is a very good combo as previously mentioned.

The 100-400mm mk2 is on the horizon and the 7D mk2 is out, you can pick up a new mk1 7D for £600 in the UK so second hand they will be £500 at the most and with the new lens out soon I expect to see a big drop in the mk1 versions of those too. I reckon body and lens second hand for under a grand, that is one hell of a set up for that sort of money

34 minute review of the 7D Mk II image quality. (Starts with a blank screen for a few seconds, annoying jingle disappears after a few seconds also. Interesting comparisons made incl. [pretty obviously] with the ‘current’ 7D). Hope it’s of interest to some, ..

Posting this here as I'm not selling them, but there's three of them in the local camera shop now! Spent last night mounting four lots of slides:- arrivals at FFA air-tattoo 1985, so far all in surprisingly in good nick. Under my thumb-nail is sore with splitting open the plastic mounts!

I got my new 7D two days ago but I haven't cracked off a shot because it's been raining buckets non stop. It's really frustrating
to have a new toy that you can't use.
