28-300 f3.5

Post by Mark » Tue Nov 13, 2018 12:55 pm

Hi all,

Bit of advise needed. I currently have the following lens's:

70-200mm f4 l series
24-105mm f4 l series
17-40 mm f4 l series

The question is, would selling these and purchasing the 28-300 f3.5 l series be a good move?

I already have the 8-16mm l series fish eye and the Sigma 150-600mm sport so at the very least i'll be saving a bit of space in the bag, but is it a good move optically??

Many thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark, This scenario reminds me of myself because there is quite a bit of duplication over the same , or similar focal length's.How about buying an L series converter with the 70-200mm in mind. How do you decide between the Canon 70-200 with converter and the Sigma 150-600 sport. Decisions, decisions !!

Hope you are well.

Cheers

Mark,

I was chatting to a RAF photographer this week about this very lens and in his humble opinion it is not very good at all and certainly not worth the money. The worst Canon lens he has ever used were his words!!

If you're talking about the EF L 28-300mm f3.5-5.6, it's a great do-it-all lens between 28 and about 220mm but hopeless at 300mm. It's also very heavy. I use it for short-range stuff but rely on prime lenses for 300mm and above.

Thanks John,

I actually swapped my 300mm prime and 1.4x tc for the 600mm sport so its unlikely that i'm going to go back down that route in all honesty, plus my 70-200mm is only the f4. Had it been the 2.8 it may be worth considering, but many thanks for your input though!!

Thanks guys, slightly conflicting reports there, but it sounds like keeping my existing collection is the way forward as the hassle of listing and selling 3 lenses on ebay far outweighs the potential benefit of a single cover all lens that doesn't perform at all the specified ranges. Maybe I should look out for a good deal on the 70-200 f2.8 instead...

Best Regards

Hi Mark,

At the moment I have the newer Tamron 150-600 (G2), Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR (Mk1) and a 1.4 teleconverter. I've ended up at these after having and selling a Nikon 300mm f4, Nikon 70-300, Nikon 55-200 and the Nikon 55-300 (which went to my son as it's an excellent small form telephoto that's good at 300mm).

I wouldn't for love nor money sell the 70-200mm f2.8, it's a superb lens, although heavy and when ever possible I'll use that with or with the teleconverter.

The only time I'd like a different lens is for shooting through fences (mainly at aircraft on stand at Doncaster airport). I find the 70-200mm lens is physically to wide (being f2.8) and picks up the fence wire (even when shot wide open) where the something like the Nikon 55-300mm has a smaller lens and doesn't have the same problem regardless of the aperture.

Lee.

Thanks Lee,

Nice collection you have (even if they are for a dirty Nikon, lol!!) to be honest I will always shoot over a fence rather than through it. I think I've pretty much given up on the idea of getting the 28-300 as most reports suggest its a bit soft at the 300mm end. the Canon L series 70-200mm f2.8 is on my radar to replace my f4 as the mk1's are now going for reasonable prices on Ebay.

Best Regards

You won't regret it Mark especially if you fork out a little extra and opt for the mk.2 version (like I did last September), without doubt the best lens I've ever had. :thumb:

Thanks John,

There's a couple on fleabay at the moment that are currently considerably cheaper. I'm watching them, but its pretty close to Christmas so may have to put any plans on hold until the new year..
