Photo editing Laptops- Suggestions?

Post by Seamus » Thu Jul 19, 2018 12:39 pm

Afternoon all,

I'm sure this subject has been done to death so apologies if I'm going over old ground. I've become increasingly frustrated with my ever-slowing PC and am looking to upgrade. I've always steered clear of laptops, but with improving monitors on them, the idea of of having the portability of a laptop has become more appealing. I've done a quick search but given there are so many options, I thought I'd seek advice on here. I'd use the laptop almost purely for photo editing using PS Elements, so it doesn't have to be at the gaming-spec end of the spectrum (which are way above what I'd be willing to pay anyway...) although I do like the idea of having the option to connect a second monitor.

Any advice/suggestions gratefully received

Thanks in advance,

Shaun

The one item where a PC scores over a laptop is the quality of the display.

The viewing angle is critical on my laptop display that I avoid editing pictures unless I can avoid it.

Personally I's go for a PC and a big colour calibrated monitor over a laptop.

I have a bog standard laptop, and had to purchase an external monitor to make up for the Intel HD Graphics (which are sh*te)

If you do get a laptop, aim for something with a very good display and with a graphics card (such as nVidia) - probably much better with a new PC.

Shaun, what sort of budget are you looking at? There's two ways you can go...

1) an ok-ish laptop that's not particularly quick, and a decent monitor
2) a decent laptop with a decent screen

Number one is cheaper, but you'll still have a slow computer. Number two is more expensive - you'd be looking at four figures.

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware of the issues regarding the quality of laptop displays, but was under the impression this wasn't such an issue these days. I'd also like the option of connecting one of the monitors I currently use to the laptop to negate that issue if need be. Plus, it's always handy to have two screens open.

Chris, I've not really set myself a budget, though I'm keen to avoid spending four figures. I figure something with a good processor, plenty of RAM and a half decent graphics card would be more than capapable of running elements quickly and smoothly?

Have a look at https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

Nothing to do with me other than the fact they supplied my laptop and those of various people I know - all of whom are very happy with them.

Dont go for a laptop, stick with a PC. I was recommended Computer Planet. They will build to your spec or "off the shelf". I told them what I wanted after their advice. They built it and delivered. Been very pleased with it. They will supply monitor if needed but I bought an ASUS Pro Art and calibrate it with Spyder 5Pro.
Check my results on the website www.wildflight.co.uk
Canon 5D Mk4 plus long lenses, and lots of hope!

Thanks for the further replies. Perhaps a desktop is the way to go after all.

I've just got one of these https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing ... 3-pdt.html

Replacing my old HP Envy laptop & It's miles faster with the SSD

Full HD Screen & an NVIDA 4Gb graphics card.

Purchased a half decent external monitor to do photo editing at home.

Currys I know but I actually went in with exactly what I wanted in mind.

Also they'll give you a trade in on your old laptop.
