Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 LD DI Macro Zoom Lens

Post by maximus » Tue Jun 12, 2018 5:01 pm

Hello all,

My Sigma DS 70-300mm just died after many years of surprisingly good photos :grr: , I am looking for another zoom lens of the same budget and thinking of going Tamron route. I am in the process of trying to repair my Sigma but want to cover myself for the airshow season.

I know that there are much better lenses if I extend my budget but I am due an upgrade soon so for now I will just stick with a cheap one. I would like to hear from those who owned this lens and maybe see some samples? I keep seeing that the auto-focus is slow so might be terrible for aviation photography.

Look forward to feedback and help :)

Thanks

M

I'm I correct in saying that neither of these has OS, if so avoid. You don't say what your budget is but a good quality secondhand Tamron 70-300 VC is £180

That is correct. Both are not stabilized what so ever. The one I have (Sigma) is the £90 version which has now gone up to the £100. I have had a great experience with it and do like the challenge of squeezing every bit out of it.

I really like the VC but it is out of my budget. Sorry, I am looking at below £100 lenses and also looking to get 2nd hand. I should have stated that before

OS or IS is not the b-all and end-all - we never had it years ago and providing you have a steady hand not that necessary especially if you are on a restricted budget. I sometime leave it off deliberately and can still get good results unless the light requires lower shutter speed. Better to have something usable than nothing at all because you can't afford or justify it. Enjoy.

Have a look for Sigma APO DG 70-300. I just got one new, about 2 weeks ago for £79.00. It was on an ebay shop, ex demo. Boxed, manufacturers guarantee and they even threw in a filter for free, that was a nice surprise when I opened the parcel.

Reasonably priced lenses are out there.

Cheers

That is why I really enjoyed my Sigma as it has none of it and it is great to see some good results !

Image stabilisation is NOT necessary if you know how to hold a camera,in fact I am convinced it degrades IQ and never use it.
It is,however useful for handholding in low light of a STATIC subject down to 1/2 second.

I have never had it and done ok so far but I am considering to have stabilized lens one day but in quite distant future.

Update!

I no longer require a second lens as I have managed to fix mine by replacing the motor I ordered from china. Works like new ! In the process though, I won 2 lenses that had fungus and those are clean now and good to go as well. I guess now I can do lens comparison

Well done Maximus. The Tamron lens is a very good one, I am a bit miffed I sold mine a few weeks ago to make room for a new lens. I just found mine to be slightly slower to focus than my other lenses, but no complaints about the images it produced. Hope all goes well for your trips out this summer.

I have the Tamron 70-300 lens on my Nikon D3300 and I'm pleased with it. Anything I've posted on here was taken with that combination.

Thanks for the info IMarsh ! I am due to use my restored to life Sigma and Canon for RIAT. I am still keeping an eye on Tamron one on ebay to see if I can get a bargain.
