Warbirds Over Wanaka, NZ March 2016

Post by Gary737 » Thu Jul 14, 2016 9:38 am

Had a chance to attend the bi-annual 'Warbirds Over Wanaka Air Show' on NZ's South Island, near Lake Wanaka this past March. We got seats in the Silver Section grandstands and were in the third row of the elevated stands. Great view from there!

The airport is a single paved strip of just 1,200 meters and is about 350 meters above sea level. The grandstands were on both sides of the single taxi-way. The aircraft used both the paved runway as well as the grass to the left in the picture below.

The Air Show was sponsored by Sir Tim Wallis and it is put on during even numbered years wheras another South Island Air Show at Omaka is held on odd years. Both are fantastic! Being small airfields, both are very 'intimate' in that you are close to the flying!

The Warbirds Over Wanaka show this year was held on Sat the 26th and Sun the 27th of March. We found out that the air show folks will put on a mini-air show for the residents of Wanaka on that Friday as a show of appreciation. That special (and free!) show takes place on/over Lake Wanaka which is about 6-7 km from the airfield.

We got there in time on that Friday, parked the car and headed to the lake's shorline. The Mini-Show comes complete with an announcer so I heard just in time, that the newly restored PBY Catalina was approaching behind us to land on the water, right in front of us! Here she comes!

And touching down......

Taxiing in front of the crowds...... looking great!

After taxiing back and turning into the wind, it was throttles forward........

Lifting off.....

Wing tip floats coming up......

She also gave us a bit of a show before landing, in the tight confines of the hills that surround the lake.

Coming down at the crowds for a low pass.

We also had some Trainers that put on a nice show.

On Sunday, we visited the Air Show and from 10am until after 4pm it was airplanes, airplanes, airplanes!

Attending types were: Spitfire, Mustang, Corsair, Avenger, a C-17 flyby, two Vampires, Strikemaster (LOUD!), ME-109/Buchons, PBY, Harvards, Dakota, Yak-3, P-40, Aussie 127 Hawks and the only Avro Anson flying in the world!

When the under-powered Vampires took off, I was sure that one was going to run off the end of the short runway! :O

Once airborne, they put on a nice display.

In no particular order.........

Well! That's the last time I listen to an Air Show announcer! ;-}

Doing some research, it may be the only Mark 1 version in the world that's flying. So I read.....

The USAF had kindly sent a C-17 from Hawaii to NZ in order to do a few fly-bys on both days. I would have loved to have seen her land and then show her short-field take-off performance but Wanaka's runway is not strong enough to support the weight of the big jet. The C-17 was based in nearby Christchurch but they put on quite a show!

Image

All day during the show, the Kiwi announcer kept informing us that the pilots of the two 'enemy' aircraft across the field must have "spent too much time in a pub last night"! "Our boys just may have to attack the enemy airfield later today!"

Image

Here's the Strikemaster on the ramp next to the Vampires.

Image

The nice RNZAF Dakota.

Image

Here's the NZ based Spitfire wearing the colors of famed Kiwi/RAF ace Alan Deere.

Image

Image

And hot on the tail of the 109/Buchon!

Image

The Allied fighters were beginning to get airborne.....

Image

Image

Image

The Anson also scrambled....

Image

Coming in towards the enemy airfield.

Image

And the attack was ON! The Corsair let loose with her .50 cals in a strafing run.

Image

Image

Ground fired nicked one of the Harvards.

Image

Here comes the Anson!

Image

Taking some hits in her port engine!

Image

And now both engines are smoking!

Image

Image

With the fires extinguished, better get her on the ground........

Image

Target destroyed......

Image

That was the Finale to the air show and it was fantastic! I always love seeing a Corsair in the air with the throaty growl of the R-2800 but the Anson might have been the most popular aircraft of the whole show! I certainly enjoyed it!

Brilliant, so glad to see something out of the ordinary (not a crticism of other posts). That Catalina and The Anson look superb, and you're spoilt with the Vampires too. Thanks for posting.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Thanks John. The announcer at the Wanaka show was quite the comedian and obviously was in love with the microphone, but was entertaining!

I'll scratch together another Report from 2009 where we attended the 'other' NZ South Island air show in Omaka. There, the cute, young female announcer kept telling everyone that the top speed of the Mustang was 440 'knots' and I cringed. That would mean well over 500 miles per hour!! She meant 440 mph........
