A look back at RIAT

Post by JonoUK » Sun Aug 19, 2018 3:28 pm

Hi All,

Hopefully room for another RIAT collection from what was a brilliant few days in Fairford. This was the best weather I've experience at a RIAT with plenty of sun and great photo opportunities. We had some friends of the family attend for their first time and I tried to get across that its not normally this sunny :) A couple of unfortunate cancellations but still a great show.

Lovely images and well caught. Would it be possible to show us one of the images pre the post process, so us mere mortals can see the work needed to reach that standard... :thumb:

Great selection from a brilliant Tattoo. I can't get enough of those Coutuea Delta Mirage 2000s so those shots get my vote, but a terrific set all in all.

What an excellent set of images. All ultra-sharp with the possible exception of the MB. Meteor & IL-76 which are probably heat-haze casualties?
I too am in awe of your PP skills, providing it hasn't taken from RIAT 'til now to edit these. ;)

Hi Jaybee, I'm not sure posting a RAW file will help much, most of them are un-cropped, un-sharpended and with less contrast versions of the ones I posted. Interestingly the ones you might think were heavily cropped might not be! I think the idea is they maintain a realistic look and so I take an approach of many minor tweaks rather than one big edit. Drop me a PM if you need any more info.

Hi Olie, almost exclusive shot with the 500mm F4 version 1 on the 7D Mark II.

Heat Haze was a struggle at times for sure, happy to make an exception for the Meteor and Il-76 though :thumb:

Cheers everyone.

Thanks for taking the time Jonouk and revealing some of your photographic process /insight habits.
RAW will answer a big amount of my quizzing and yes tweaking, Fine tuning after that , is understandable! .
I shoot JPEG for its return speed, and can see from your shots, the value of keeping the slightest amount of white does go a long way...cheers... :thumb:

P/s ... The close up stuff in good detail though, does make an eye popping impact , we can all remember to use more stuff like that , to add more "pop" in the eye value
