Shannon NOAA WP-3D question

Post by Gary » Sat Feb 04, 2017 10:08 am

Before people scream civvy, it operates from MacDill AFB and has links to 53rd WRS

Does anyone know the call sign it's be using? I've done a search and the HEX doesn't get picked up often. Also is it still at Shannon? Last I read it was operating for a couple of weeks

No problem with posting about either of the two NOAA WP-3D's. They both have Bu Nos N42RF being 159773 and N43RF 159875. Info from the Joe Baugher site says that N42RF is called Kermit and surprise surprise N43RF is called Miss Piggy.

It seems a long time ago that I first saw N42RF at Ontario, CA in 1976 and the pair of them at their then Miami base in 1979.

Purely out of interest and the reference to the aircraft operating over Florida, I had a look at the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron. The "Hurricane Hunters":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/53d_Weath ... e_Squadron

My reference was the Air Force officer in uniform that frequently appears on NASA TV during KSC launches, often the same lady (Kathy ????).
It looks like the KSC weather is in fact provided by the 45th WRS, based at Patrick:

Definitely military as plm135 states

Photo available from that site.
Thanks to plmc135 for details.

Must be in collaboration with Michael Fish for hurricanes in these parts :)
