The Peterhead Lightning
The Peterhead Lightning
Sharp eyes will recognise this one as the aircraft that the Airfix model was based upon...
I ticked off an item on my Round-to-it list yesterday when i managed to get some photos of the Lightning at Peterhead.
This one has good memories for me as i was one of the team that dismantled the aircraft at Leuchars so it could be transported to Tees-side Airport. To cut a long story short it was eventually brought back north again to reside within the Score UK complex as a gate guard.
The company has an association with the Avon engines as they are still used as gas turbines in the North Sea oil industry.
What an aircraft, we'll no see the likes o' that again.

Just how that shadow got there is beyond me.

Re: The Peterhead Lightning
Nice pictures! I remember seeing her in Teesside around 96 i think?? Looks to be in good shape still, needs some carpet spikes on the vertical tail to keep the birds off. Also looks like someones been snooping in that access panel aft of the canopy.
Re: The Peterhead Lightning
nice, i love that, must try and get around to seeing her myself, canopy looks in decent shape aswell, touch of moisture, but seen much much worse. If only i could have a lightning in the garden,

Flt Lt M (Mike) Hale... there is a blast from the past! His name appears in my log book several times from flying training on the JP5 at Cranwell where he was an instructor. On many a non-flying day he would regale us with WIWOL stories... and we loved them. Such a nice chap to!

Re: The Peterhead Lightning
Hi,
I'm assuming she's still there!! Although, i have tried to contact them about visiting to take a few photos myself but have had no response - they took my name and number, and another time i emailed but no response.
Perhaps it's gone? Or they're just not fussed about visitors!
Cheers,
Gav.

Re: The Peterhead Lightning
I remember it from Teesside ... nice pictures and it does look in good condition.
Is this the frame which was over-stressed and so WFU? I'm sure there was a story behind it.

Ferrari

Remember photographing this @ the then Teesside Airport back in '96. When I returned after a gap of around a doz yrs it was gone. Always wondered what had happened to it. Glad it found a good home!

Score wee going to be relocating a lot of their facilities to the old HMP Peterhead if I remember right. Not sure exactly what though.

Re: The Peterhead Lightning
Just in case you're passing (!), and can't get a positive response from Score, IIRC, a passable photograph is possible by climbing up the bank outside the complex and shooting from there.

Was up in the area today on a wee afternoon out with the family so just decided to roll up and see what happens security on the gate at first said no need permission from Score management but after a wee bit of chit chat and said will only be 5 mins was told on you go quick as you can, so i count myself lucky well it was good friday after all ! the jet its self looks in tip top condition credit to Score for keeping it that way
