CANBERRA AT 40.

Post by james baker » Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:16 pm

I only joined F C in October and thanks to Richard Hull for getting me started. As a new member I have probable posted to much so after this I will give a rest until December.
Anyway the this offering is R.A.F. Wyton 12 th May 1989 to celebrate this great jet at 40 the R.A.F. put out all of the airframes on base plus some assistance from R.A.E and Royal Navy.
In addition squadrons which had operated the Canberra were invited to attend so we have a good collection of front line jets of the day .The exception to all that is naturally the Andover
which was carrying out its normal calibration work.

James, another fine set. I remember sitting in the car outside the base in the pouring rain, wondering why ? then the sun came out. Beautiful light on the Anniversary Canberra.

You are right about the weather sat in the car with the rain lashing down thinking another wasted day,the clouds rolled back and the sun came out .The shot of the F4 parking shows the line of cloud moving off through the centre of the photograph, made for clear shots no mist dust or haize .

Hi James :P

What an awesome, evocative post

Always will love the 'Cannie', especially the PR9 ;)

Still got the DVD I recorded off the Beeb of the anniversary, complete with the interview with the late Reg McKendrick, and the 'Green Marrows' display team; also the Canberra that some wag had stuck a large cardboard clock winder onto the side and said it was the Canberra's version of a 'Sidewinder'

Thanks for posting :thumb:

I failed to wangle a day off school for this event. I think this is the best set of photos I've seen of it though.

Hi Jim,
Haven't posted a comment for a good couple of years, this is giving me the incentive to dig out some of my past efforts. Remember this event like it was yesterday, good scans and great aircraft to boot, remember getting wet during my walk around. If only such like photo calls can be arranged like this, I know, dream on. I like looking at all of your post, keep them coming.
Paul.

Superb. I was at this event, I remember the clatter of a thoiusand camera shutters when a 51 Sqn Nimrod R1 taxied out and took off.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
