Waddington 19 3 1993 Mirage f 1 on ACMI.
Could someone please tell me when the North Sea Range was established at R A F Waddington and the first aircraft to use it .The following scans were the first shots I took connected with ACMI so I don't know what went before and what I missed .

First opened for business in 1990 from memory, I don't have access to my records at the minute, so can't confirm who was the first to use it

Hi James
Looking through my olds BARG mag`s it states that, just as Tim indicated, the NSAR opened in 1990. According to BARG the range opened in August 1990 and was fully operational by October that year. It seems the Belgians "may" have been first, arriving on 08.10.90 were F-16s FA-01, FA-98 (2 Sqd) and FB-23 (1 Sqd). They stayed until the 12th operating with 229OCU Tornado F.3s. Then a Danish contingent arrived on the 30th comprising Drakens: A-006, A-008, A-014 and F-16s E-004. E-018 and E-598, which stayed until 1.11.90.
Looking at October`s listing shows a lot of other nations visiting, including Dutch and Norwegians and several countries where being given free try-outs at this time, so these visitors were probably related. The Swiss came on such a freebie the following month when F-5s J-3019, J-3023, J-3047, J-3058, J-3063 and J-3208 arrived on 16.11.90 as part of Nordseekampagne 90 (NORKA 90); the first of many annual NORKA deployments. They departed back on the 23.11.90.
I seem to recall NORKA 90 was not blessed with good weather. I for one remember sitting all day in the car waiting for the fog to lift and freezing my b*tt off. Even so, what I`d give for those days to return now. It was a sad day when that place closed, who could forget those NOMAD deployments? French, Swiss, Belgians and Spanish all mixing it up.
Regards,
John

Hi John many thanks for the comprehensive information in the years that followed I never saw Danish Drakens so my photographic records are not as complete as I thought .It seems to me that with the hundreds of visitors and thousands of photographs taken someone should publish a pictorial record of those great days how fortunate we were to witness it .
Best Regards Jim Baker

A website would be nice but a lot of work I guess. An FC ACMI thread might be a start?
I never saw Danish Drakens on the ACMI either, although they were regular visitors to Waddo` for "Mallet Blow" exercises. I guess this was just about when they were nearing the end of their time. I seem to recall the Austrian Drakens being on the ACMI at least twice though, possibly three times? They use to sound just like a Lightning when they started up.
Nice formation pic` BTW. I think the Mirage F-1 was the best looking of all the Mirage variants.

Remember the Austrians visiting in 1995 and again in 1997. Not sure if they did a third time.

Just had a quick dig around Tim and looks like they came back in 2002 as well.

Picture 7 is a great shot. Looks like the undercarriage it about to go.
Re: Waddington 19 3 1993 Mirage f 1 on ACMI.
That formation shot is impressive. Never saw any French Mirage F1s there, only 2000s, altho' on one of the last Nomads a Spanish contingent operated out of Coningsby as the opposition which made a nice change from the usual F-16s, F-18s, 2000s and F3s so I was one of those who opted to spend the day there when I heard about them.

Managed to find negs of the Swiss visit of June 1993 in company with F3s so I will scan them and post next week to keep the thread rolling.
