Tangmere Museum

Post by Del » Thu Jun 14, 2018 8:44 am

Made a quick trip to Tangmere museum yesterday. Didn't have my main camera with me, and it's a little bit cramped for photography inside, but here's just a few photos as a shout-out for a very pleasant and well maintained museum.

Brought back memories. Was stationed at Tangmere late 60's early 70's. They used to have a Javelin (I believe or possibly a Meteor, memory bit poor) that was used for fire practice. A great posting on Tactical Signals, most of us had part time jobs at Butlins, courtesy of Billy who used to park his aircraft when visiting.

Well, a bit off-topic, I was going to post these later on, but as you mentioned a Javelin, here's one at the Tangmere 1963 airshow :

and while I'm at it, at the same show is this Mosquito TW117 (and what looks like a P1127 / Kestrel off to the right)

Sorry for bumping this up, but it's always bothered me about saying the plane next to the Mosquito above might be a P1127, when it's clearly not.
After some searching I found on scramble.nl (and twitter) that it's a Avro 707C, WZ744. Just wanted to put the record straight.
If anyone's interested, the Javelin is listed as XH905.
Thanks.
Derek

You mentioned the P1127 Derek. While I was at Tangmere I was lucky enough to be part of a Brigade Air Support (16 Air Assault) I was RAF. We started with Hunters and then did the evaluation of the P1127, Kestral, Harrier. As well as giving them targets (FAC) we were also used as targets. At age 19 it was a brilliant job & have never forgotten the lovely Harrier.
