Friday the 13th (on a Thursday)
Friday the 13th (on a Thursday)
Had a ride over to the Yorkshire Air Museum today to get some photos of their Handley Page Halifax bomber which usually resides in their main hangar. However, for an event this weekend it was towed out into the sunshine this afternoon giving a rare chance of some photos outdoors.
The aircraft is a composite of a number of surviving airframe parts. On one side it is painted as 'LV907' an aircraft of 158 Squadron RAF which as the famous 'Friday the 13th' flew 128 missions. The other side is completed to represent 'NP763' coded 'H7-N' and aircraft of 346 'Guyenne' Squadron, Free French Air Force which was one of two French bomber squadrons based at Elvington during the war.
The Halifax has always seemed to be the ‘poor relation’ to the Avro Lancaster but at one point the RAF had 76 squadrons of them. In total they flew 83,773 missions during the war during which 1,833 aircraft were lost.

Re: Friday the 13th (on a Thursday)
Lovely shots i have not seen this for many years , it certainly looks to be in top shape.
Am I right in thinking that this and the Canadian Halifax are the only intact survivors.

This is the only intact survivor in the world. There is no Canadian one as far as I'm aware. Think you maybe confusing it with their Lanc!eagle driver wrote:Lovely shots i have not seen this for many years , it certainly looks to be in top shape.

There is at least one (possibly more than one) intact Halifax in Canada. Just checking...

Eagles soar, but Weasels don't get sucked in to jet engines.

Yes. NA337 is at the National Air Force Museum of Canada.

Brilliant shots of a neglected subject matter, IMHO
