Alconbury Rhinos

Post by Wigzy » Sun Apr 15, 2018 2:51 pm

With three full squadrons of RF-4s and associated support assigned the base became the destination of choice for USAFE F-4s conducting overwater navigation training and these could be seen obligingly parked alongside the Stukely Road on most weekends. When the aggressor program stood up in 1976 it began hosting all of the USAFE F-4 squadrons for week-long DACT exercises and the detachments were parked on the Abbots Ripton side of the field. They were 'protected' by flimsy 3-foot high sticks linked by two strands of rusty barbed wire (with numerous gaps) which seems incredible by today's standards. In addition to all this the base was a natural way-station for regular transatlantic RF-4 deployments making Alconbury the go-to place for all Phantom Phans.

All three posts are absolutely fantastic and thanks for posting - these are really worth the effort and time taking to post and thanks so much!

All ways good to see F-4s but from these squadrons / wings at these bases is outstanding - did yourself proud here John
