Re: Starlifter '40612'
Sad to hear that Bernie's no longer with us. He was a good lad.
As were Lifter Ken [pic1 centre], Alitalia Stuart [pic1, sitting to left of Ken], Wembley Martin [pic3, 2nd from left]... all went long ago.
Edit: Mad Dick and Globie Ken in pic4. Happy days!

Re: Starlifter '40612'
Wembley Martin or Tex as we knew him is often fondly remembered at Heathrow. He would have loved all the internet and virtual radar tech we enjoy these days. He worked for the London underground and apparently had a HF box in his office.
In the second pic on the left looks like a young looking Aussie Pete standing next to Fred, I still see Pete around occasionally
I think that is Pleb Dave at the back in the third picture - bit of an Antonov guru , passed away a few years back.
I was never part of that clique but there was quite a lot of overlap between various groups at Heathrow where I got to know Columbo quite well - he still gets out , mainly on civil
The nick names always used to make me laugh , Pleb Dave, beaky Mick , noisy Dick ( - saw him at Heathrow a couple of years back) lifter Ken , Wycombe because he lived in Wycombe! , Boozy Al, the balloon and basket, Columbo - he always wore a rain coat. ovlov - worked for Volvo!
Everybody would end up in the Green man (and then when barred from there the D.O.W Duke of Wellington) after a days spotting.
I didn't know the story behind 40612 until I read the above link

I've just noticed the bonnet of the car, in pic 3. Looks like it might be Cliff's 1600E.

Re: Starlifter '40612'
Also barred from the Kings Head, Mildenhall - although it was better known as The Temporary Sign (I've never known a pub have a temporary sign for so long!). Things came to a head (no pun intended) when, as I recall, the conversation degenerated to a comparison of scars! This culminated in one who shall remain nameless dropping his jeans to display the top of his leg. Publican not amused, marching orders given. That pub also had the jukebox that jammed - one winter, whatever you put on, it would play Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas...". Dear me, there's enough to fill a book here!
PS Wasn't it one of Noisy Dick's cars that is the only vehicle entry in BAR's write off section? (In a ditch at Mildenhall, natch).

The Kings Head... I was trying to think of that pub's name this morning. I only ever knew it as The Temporary Sign.
Once we were more mobile, my preference was The Pear Tree, West Row. A lovely drop of Greene King Abbot or IPA in those days. As I remember, there was a sign in the pub that said something like "We take in shoe repairs".

Re: Starlifter '40612'
I was banned from there along with a few others once ,not for dropping my trousers but for repeatedly going outside .
Lakenheath were using 06 so were landing over Beck row when some ANG F-4 s decided to bash the circuit before recovering to Upper Heyford. Landlord got fed up with us trooping in and out all the time , strange you would of thought he would enjoy the custom.

The landlord was Dave Parker, a legend in his lifetime, he had a brilliant, sarcastic sense of humour.

Re: Starlifter '40612'
Afternoon all,
I was in London last week and met someone a few of you may remember.....Andy 'BILL' Withers. I have persuaded him to join this site and told him about the 'One Percent' photos on this thread. I have just looked and sadly they seem to have disappeared. Can they be reposted please ?
I was a NHT/LHR spotter and a regular Saturday night attendee at ' The Crown' Heathrow. I knew Pleb Dave, Tex, Caveman Phil all RIP, and quite a few of the other 'Suspects' in those phots.
Regards Tony Rogers (Flat Top Tone).

Never actually saw her but the graffiti on all the road signs...takes me back to my number crunching days long before a photograph was number one.
