Visit to Erickson Collection,Madras,OR.sep2017

Post by bvs » Wed Oct 04, 2017 4:48 pm

We have recently returned from a USA 'road trip',arriving at SFO we had rented a cute kia sportage and next day we had a leisurely drive up to Madras,Oregon (approx 550 miles) with a visit planned to the Erickson Collection for the day after !
The Erickson Collection had previously been based at Tillamook but moved to Madras approx 3 years ago,so still a fairly new venue with a purpose built Hangar.
This is not a museum - all the aircraft are flyers except for the Martin Mauler (what a beast) and the P39.

looks great.

"..... all the aircraft are flyers except for the Martin Mauler (what a beast) and the P39......" even the Neptune, Bf109, and the Japanese (Oscar?) fighter?

That Bellanca is evidence that it doesn't have to look right!

Oh I dunno - I think she looks really nice in a picasso sort of way :D
Bellancas design philosophy was to make as many parts of the a/c create lift - so that included the fuselage and the 'struts' - I believe that originally the 'struts' also carried baggage/frieght.
Apparently we missed seeing her fly by a week or 2 :'(

The aircraft was originally a Buchon HA-1109 built under license by Hispano Aviación and equipped with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. It was used in the 1969 film The Battle of Britain before finding its way to Erickson’s facility in Madras, Oregon. Pacific Fighters performed the restoration of the machine, bringing it as close as possible to a German Me 109 configuration. Work included equipping it with new exhaust stacks, an original cowling and an Allison engine as a substitute for the original Daimler-Benz

I did not get any close ups but my gf did :)
Neat installation and apparently test flown by John Romain in apr 2017
